i-opener-linux site gone?
Gee what a surprise...

New Messagei-opener-linux site gone? (modified 0 times) cyrixone
The press believes the I-Opener is unhackable.

The people on eBay believe the I-Opener is unhackable.

The #i-opener-linux channel on openprojects is almost empty.

Is this the end?

NO! It CANNOT be the end! We're not finished yet! Where is the easy-to-use replacement OS for the I-Opener that makes it just like Netpliance's in terms of newbie ease-of-use but works with any ISP? What happened to the TRUTH about the latest v4 I-Openers; the way to reflash them is found and a new qnxflash gets released with no fanfare? Circuit City has been getting I-Openers in by the truckload and selling them for $99 (while Netpliance wants $399) and they're even available for order on their website, where's the slashdot article? What's going on here?!

The I-Opener "craze" will not be over until the Netpliance I-Opener is TOTALLY unhackable OR Netpliance goes out of business. $399 is not an unreasonable price for an embedded computer and I'm sure when the units start to ship there will still be some people interested in making them into fully-functional computers. Someone needs to take charge of keeping the information current and watching the emerging I-Appliance market... If not for hacking, then do it to keep all the knowledge obtained in this endeavor from suffering bit-rot and fading into oblivion.

i nominate you, cyrixone.

most of us have lives to get back to. instead of bitching about someone else doing it, why don't you?

sorry, the bandwagon has left town, and the craze is dying. the only people left on this board seem to have no clue what the hell they are doing. they have a hard time following instructions, let alone coming up with new solutions. the truth hurts.

Sorry to say, but most of the fun is over. All you can be is a tour guide and show the late comming tourists how to do it. You can go through the site, and cull most of the valuable stuff down to about 20 pages or less.

All the I-O's are hackable. Just did a true V5 today. I'll be looking forward to the first true V6. $400 isn't bad if you aren't stuck with a TOS.

cyrixone: If the press believes it unhackable, hey, that's their problem.

Now that'd be a cool hack - whether it ran on an IO or not. Open source it and spread it to the masses.

Unfortunately, open source requires a developer with an "itch to scratch" - and most developers don't see "insanely user-friendly interfaces" as an itch :(

I won't get around to hacking mine (v4) until being done with the 3 month TOS. It's already fully explained how to do that. (I could have just bought the 3 months service and not used it but paying for something I don't use is against my religion.)

I won't go get another for $399 though.

I doubt I'll do anything fancy with it, probably initially win98, then later with a 2nd USB port use it as a FreeBSD firewall.

It's not the end of the world that the "craze" is over. BFD. There'll be stupid companies in the future
