A Product Search for iopener on the Circuit City web site does not
find the I-opener any more. Have they removed it from the site?

Yes, the i-opener has been cancelled by Circuit City, even on the web site. All references to the product haven't quite yet been taken away as of tonight, however all ordering opportunities have been removed. So, for example, at CircuitCity.com, click "Computers and Peripherals" and then "Internet Appliances," and you're taken to a "Basics" page with some information. Then click the link that says "I-OPENER INTERNET TERMINAL" and you hit a dead-end. That page has been removed from the site. Moreover, it's been removed from the site search engine as well, leaving no way to buy online.

Finally, the local manager of our Circuit City here in Knoxville, TN, did confirm that Circuit City will no longer feature the Nepliance product in the stores.

UPDATE - Circuit City to get IO 2001

A CircuitCity.com toll-free salesperson (1-877-932-2225) just told me that they have cleared their existing Netpliance i-opener stock. However, he did say that they HAVE NOT discontinued carrying the Netpliance line and that the new "i-opener 2001" product will be in stores and on the web site when it is released. He added that this will occur "in the next month or two" and that the item "has some minor improvements." This certainly bodes well for Netpliance vis-a-vis their retail presence. I'm wondering what the "minor improvements" are, though, other than the higher price point of $399 and the addition of "i-Chimes" instant messaging (per Netpliance.com). Faster processor? Even harder to hack? Better multimedia support? None of the above? Stay tuned.

I saw that the I-Opener was deleted from the CC web site yesterday. Today, I received two "Back In-Stock" notifications from CC urging me to order one from there; go figure...

Don't believe the CompUSA web site, either. Says there is stock at both Rockville & Towson, MD locations--WRONG! Dweeb at Towson said they're discontinued and he only has the demo, so I hit him up for that one (after all, they're discontinued.) He responds that it isn't fully functional, so I say I want it only for parts. Feeling cornered, he calls the manager who adds a third story that the demo device is leased and can't be sold. Sheesh, if you don't want to make a sale, just say so! Me suspects there is someone wanting the employee discount on that open-box item.

Spike, when you go to the Circuit City site after receiving that "back in stock" email, you'll find that there's no way to actually buy it after all. A quick call to toll-free Circuit City customer service (1-877-932-2225) will confirm that the email was an error.

As for CompUSA discontinuing the product, that's interesting -- and not a very good sign for Netpliance if that proves to be true...

Thanks to the timely heads-up on this one, I was able to quickly pick up a display model at CC for $84.96 + tax (Yeah, I know, it should have been $79.95, but the sales droid wouldn't budge, since it showed up as $84.96 on his computer). It appears to be a V1 demo, thus leaving me with one unit each of V1,2,3,4 and 5. Maybe I should start a museum or something .

I picked up the Demo at the Montlake Terrace C-USA today. Just stopped in on a whim AGAIN... Did not have any real plans on buying an i-Opener. Just out of curiousity I asked if they had SKU# 274376 in stock. The sales drone looked it up and AGAIN just one in stock. He went back to the laptop storage room and pulled out a DEMO unit. I said I will TAKE IT and he said wait a minute I will find the box so they have the upc code for the cashier. He brought out another sealed i-Opener box....EWWHoo the dreaded "V-5"....He said he will have to sell me this one in the box instead of the "open box"(Demo) unit. I said I don't want the one in the box I want the open box one...He looked at me real puzzled and said he will have to call his manager. At this point I thought I lost the demo. After waiting 5+ minutes the manager showed up and said sell it to him for $90.00. I thought to myself, Kool and after they wrote up the order I told him the reason I wanted the demo because it has the Yamaha sound chip and not the newer AD chip. He did not seem to care.
Well this is i-Opener #8 I did sell one at work for $200.00 (I think it was a V-5?) so I only actually have 7 now.

For those folks that say they cannot get one, YOU ARE NOT TRYING HARD ENOUGH! Persistance is the key. (And being lucky helps too...) P.S. Totem lake sold me there "demo" too a while back.

Oh yeah almost forgot, I did have 2 cashier dudes drooling over it at the checkout counter...One seen it was the demo and said I needed to signup for the isp service, I said no I don't! He went over to the Manager and asked him then came back and rang it up. No tos, no signatures, paid cash. (Me think's the cashier wanted to get it for himself)
