ok, I know there are some threads on some of this... I'd like to start a new one, feel free to post all the good links etc. I'd like to take one of my V5, put it into a hard briefcase. put the screen in the top, the keyboard, etc , in the bottom. With chbones CD-rom idea, play mp3's, run map program...
so, with V5, prolly use USB speakers, nothing fancy, no solding on chips, :), but, need to decide between just running on 12V, or, 12V to 19V booster... or, 12V to 110 converter...
by useing the hard case, easy to hide/put in trunk. just want power cable out, and speaker/usb cable out, so, how about some great feedback? thanks guys

ok, I will copy this, thanks ttn1

This is from an old post. I ordered my cdrom drives from bason computer also. They don't have them listed on their
website http://www.basoncomputer.com , but if you call they have them. Although I got mine about a month ago. It's
still worth a try. My cdroms work great, they are XM1402Bs. Also, their hardrives are reasonably priced.

This guy is selling 2x, 4x, and 6x for 15$ each. He had an ebay auction so I asked him what he had and how big they
were. They seem like they would fit in the case ok. heres the text from his emails. His address
is:weili@basoncomputer.com and you could order from him at: 800-238-4453x115
> They are 5.25" x .8" x 5.4"
>
> XM1102BX 2x
> XM1302B 4x
> XM1402B 6x
>
> they are all 44pin IDE interface. drive only. all the same price $15/ea

DISCLAIMER: I dont know this guy, I cant tell you if he is trustworthy or not but his ebay rating was good. I got his
info from this auction: 297066365. If you get screwed by this guy dont come whining to me. I have not yet ordered
from him yet but I am going to soon, hopefully before you guys clean him out.

I was the one who posted that, like about 4 months ago or something. the lady I talked to was very nice, it was only 19$ total shipped for a 6x drive (they are selling on ebay for a lot more so if I dont need it... we know where it will go). It came promptly and was very well packed. If there are any still left you wont be disappointed.

ok, first hurdle over... my USB speakers Work with my V5!, ie, NO Yamaha chip.... I must admit, I had to put the HD on my V1 first, got sound working, then back to the V5.. you may have better luck than me.... ok, so, now I have _another power supply... the LCS-1040 is AC to 15 vDC, 29.5W .... so, ... we'll have to figger out AC, DC , for IO, and speakers... anything else we should run?? thanks

I dont have usb speakers so I really cant answer the question, but depending on how you access an audio cd, you can treat the tracks as files (at least in BeOS you can) and play them without relying on an audio connection. Now, since USB sound works like a sound card with the cpu doing to sound processing, there should be no reason you could not get cd sound *if* you are able to use the cdtracks as files.

pyr, I agree... so, playing MP3's off of a cd with musicmatch should work fine...and, thats what I plan...I guess the problem could be playing _regular music cd's... but of course, I have a burner, so , MP3's is what I have in mind!

hrm... I should clarify. Think of it this way: CD tracks are data. You can think of each track as a file. Usually, CDRoms dont do that, they just start reading bits and feed them to the sound card (thru the analogue sound out on the drive). Now, if you use a system that can treat the tracks on a cd as data files instead of just tracks to be read bit by bit, you can play it. I am playing voodoo glow skulls right now off an audio CDrom. How? I am using BeOS, and I selected the track to be read as a wav file (the type of data the files on the cdrom are). this means that CLamp (the BeOS audio player I am using) treats the song as tho it is a file playing off something like a hard drive, or whatnot. if you find the right application you might be able to do the same in windows, but I really dont know.

yes, I am able to play MP3's _from a networked CD-rom, on my V5, with the USB speakers... so, I'm sure when I get the CD-rom running on the V5 it will be fine, btw, my CD-roms came today, now, just need the cables... wonder, is there a way to test them? not sure I have enough stuff...hehe, and, I've messed up befor... prolly best to just wait... btw, there are pin's for L R sound out, and G ... but, I will prolly stay with USB speakers...

ok if it works from a networked cdrom then you will be able to get it to work from a local cdrom as well.

do you have a cable already for your hard drive? if so, just connect the cdrom instead of the drive, start the io up and you should hear it start to spin up and it should be detected by the bios. I set my cdrom as slave and it worked just fine tho some people suggested setting it as master. that will lower performance a great deal if you use it often enough so I dont recommend doing it that way. it should be an easy job to wire up the L,R and grounds, but there really isnt any need to do so.

Not to burst your bubble, but I was going to do all this too, and even build some sort of home made 19V converter, or duct tape a 110V inverter to the stock power supply, get some USB sound stuff, make a box, on and on.
Then I saw a $150 item at a computer store, looked like a CD walkman you find at walmart for $20, but it played MP3's from CD!
I started thinking about how I could stuff that thing in the trunk, make it play random, and connect it to 12V when the car is on. If my radio had a input switch, I would have it made (it just plays all the time, I switch when I want MP3).
So I open my trunk once a month and drop a new CD in when I get bored of the 8 (or is it more?) hours of music.
I am going to be smart and wait because I know there will be a $75 model at kmart showing up just after I buy mine, it always happens that way.
So now I can use my I-Opener with Linux to dial into the net automaticly at night when my phone isn't in use and download all those MP3's I want. That's a good use for it, and I don't have to worry about heat on the LCD, or power, or audio out, or a protective case.
Another good use: Dial in and get yahoo weather map and info every hour and display it full screen. Anyone got a good Linux script to do this yet?

true, MP3 players should be getting much cheaper... but, I just got Automap Streets working on mine, with just the area's I'm likely to be in, so, this is useful... remember...its just a fun 'toy', put to good use... :)

area51: True there are cheaper, more effective ways of doing it, but the whole 'wow that is awesome' effect of using the Iopener is simply much more fun. plus if Im ever on a long drive with someone I could just keep them busy with a game or something.
