OK, I got my I-Opener in my car. Here is a website to explain what I did.

Let me know what you think!

Do you have an e-mail address snackpack? I really like your mp3/gps program and would like to know if you could open source it to help anyone who wants to make something similar (ie: me). I think I'd like to make a program similar to yours, but that runs off of the jailbait distro and access mp3's on a cd... or possibly off of a 1 gig laptop disk I'm getting which accesses a CD. Anyway, it'd be nice if you could release the source to help with XAUDIO, QT, and GPS programming, none of which I have experience with. Always easier to learn by example.

I have a few questions. First, how do you cool down the hard drive? It must get hot inside a tupperware container. Second, what if you get in an accident, like smacking a deer? any bump will surely corrupt the MP3's you have on your hard drive. Do you have a backup disk? Third, what if a cop pulls you over? He'll wonder what the heck that is in the passenger side. He won't care about the hacking part, but he'll wonder about other stuff. I don't want to sound like a fool, but these are legitamate questions.

Back online after a 1000 mile move. :)

OK, Kade:
I don't cool the hard drive. It may have been operating outside the recommended temp range while I was in Texas, but it never gave me one problem in the Texas August heat. I bet it would get up to 120 or 130 in my car, too. Now that I am in Colorado, I don't worry about it at all.

About shick absorption, It is pretty well protected. If you see from the pictures, it is engulfed in the foam it was shipped in. Also, the bottom of that foam is egg-crated, giving added suspension. I'm sure hitting a deer would not be as traumatic on the hard drive as some of the bumps I have driven on. This hard drive can take quite a bit. In fact, I once dropped the keyboard on it while it was running, and it didn't flinch. The Celica has a pretty hard suspension, too. At first I was very weary about bumps, slowing down for everything, but I feel very comfortable with it.
Yes, I have all of the MP3s and software backed up.
Well it is not illegal to have a screen like that in your car in Texas. Have you seen the stereo systems in new Mercedes Benzes? They have a huge LCD in them, too. I'm not sure about Colorado. I just moved here, and it doesn't sem like an anal state as far as this sort of thing goes. I'll double check for sure, though.

zhensel:
I am working on some finishing touches on the software. After putting it to use, I have found things I would like to add and change. Also, much of it is hardware dependant and some #ifdefs would be in order. :) I'll post something when I get the software ready.

SnackPack,
How did you input the RCA signal into the Pioneer unit...I have a similar model (same specs as the DEH-P7200) but from what I researched, you need to purchase a Pioneer CCD-RB10 or CCD-RB20 IP-BUS Adapter for RCA inputs. I was wondering how these units worked anyways since I will need to get one.

BTW, trick setup...hopefully mine will turn out as nice.

Deuce,
The P7200 is great, huh? Anyways, I had to order the CD-RB10 direct from pioneer. 1-800-PIONEER. It was like 35 bucks or something. It plugs into the changer port on the back and then you plug your RCA cord straight into that box. No sweat, and it's all inside the dash, which is nice.

Next, you have to turn the AUX mode on in the player. You can actually do this without the converter, but there's no point. :) Simply turn the head unit off and hold down the FUNC button for 2 seconds. A menu will come up and one of the options is to enable the AUX source.

Pretty ####ing slick. BTW, the CD-RB10 and the CD-RB20 differ in that with the CD-RB20, you can still plug a changer into the unit. I opted to go with the CD-RB10 since, I have no use for a changer anymore. :)

I also have a new Pioneer Receiver with the Ibus and the RCA adaptor. I got the one with the Changer pass through just in case.

I don't have my Iopener up and running yet, but I was using my laptop with 650 songs-outputting through the guts of the USB Labtec speaker, into the Pioneer unit.

I have a large Sub and MB Quart speakers...I can barely tell the MP3s from the CD in the receiver.

Actually the only noticeable difference is the I have to turn up the AUX volume 3 clicks to equal the CD output.

BTW I use Music Match to create the VBR MP3s at 50% compression. (5 or 6 Megs per song)

Is anybody worried about how the LCD will cope with cold weather? I've left laptops and my Nokia in the car before and the displays always run a bit slower...fading from one image to the next. I know there are a number of vans and cars (like the Mercedes mentioned ealier) that have LCDs, but those seem to be heavily insulated within the console. Any ideas on how the I-O is going to respond?

There are a few things that will effect the performance and quality of an LCD display. They include excessive heat, cold, light and humidity. Most LCD devices are well protected against humidity (The display in the iopener included), but the rest of the computer isn't protected.

I'd say heat and cold are your primary concern. Not only for the LCD, but the hard drive as well. A simple rule of thumb is; If you're comfortable, the computer is too. I wouldn't even consider turning it on if the car is hotter than about 110° or colder then about 50°. Wait until you're comfortable. Actually quite a bit longer when the climate is severe to allow the hard drive to cool or warm as well.

Thanks LV.
Excuse me if this is a dumb question...is there any chance of the screen actually cracking from the cold? I'm up in frigid Wisconsin so we get some cold ones up here.

I would worry more about the chance of condensation doing damage to the iopener as it warms up as well as attempts to start a hard drive in that cold weather!

What I suggest is rig up a docking setup so that you can take the iopener into the house at night keeping it always toasty warm.

Well, you all bring up a very good point about the cold of winter. I can vouch for the heat of summer, though. My car has a dark interior with no tinting, so in Texas, it would probably get up towards 140 or 150 in that car in August. The I-Opener never flinched because of this heat. However, my Sproggy I-booster power supply crapped out and that may have been a comination of the heat and power load.

We'll just have to see about winter. I live in Colorado now (Fort Collins), and I would liek to see how the I-Opener fairs in the cold weather. The floor vents in the car provide an excellent heat source after a few minutes of driving.

One thing that would make the I-Opener MUCH easier to take inside would be an internal hard drive. 25 gig 2.5" drives are falling in price (less than $400 now). Perhaps by winter I can throw one of these in there.

Later on.
