Ordering upgrade chips from Fry's Electronics
Big problems

Please, search on my name in the technical area for other info on this.

Yesterday I ordered a K6-III 333 AFK, for 29.95+ shipping, by phone, from Fry's in Sunnyvale, CA.

When I placed the order, the clerk was nice and helpful, but ever since they got my CC# and billing address, they have become clueless and unresponsive.

Yesterday, they were supposed to either e-mail or call me with shipping costs. They never did.

I spent over 2 hours on the phone today, speaking with (it seemed) every employee in the Sunnyvale store trying to find out the shipping cost and if it even could be shipped to an address different from my billing address.

Things I found out:

It is *impossible* for Fry's to lookup your order without the name of the person that took the order.

That's right, date, time, item, shipping address, billing address, item description are all useless to them. They do not have any records, but they do fill out an order form (paraphrased). Even if you do have the name of the person you ordered from, they can't look anythiong up, they have to wait for that person to come back to work and ask him about it.

They assured me that the order form was not the back of a napkin.

Estimated shipping cost (since I did not have the name of the person that took my order) was $12 for one chip. They could not tell me if it has shipped. For $12 it takes 5 busness days to get to VA from CA (another estimate).

They swore that mine was not the first telephone order that they have ever taken, nor was it the first CC order, but the "remember the clerk" system is the way they have always done it.

Store managers can not be bothered with things like this, but if you call for something like this they want your CC# again, even though they can not lookup your order with your CC#.

Conclusion:
Deal only in person and in cash at Fry's Electronics.

yes im from cleveland, ohio and i have been to fry's electronics in fountian vally,ca(in orange country) and seen the store it's huge! but i do not think they do mail orders,i did ask them about catalog so.... it's strictly walk in type there are no separate reister lines but it's combined into one long counter and the salepeople put up hand yellow sign telling next customer , intresting idea and there are no fry's in cleveland , as for ordering over phone they should have given you the invoice # and the name of the clerk before giving the cc # it may urn out a fake clark has your cc# and watch out your billing statement for unusual charges :)
so my own rule is no clerk name or invoice numbers then no cc # given

Fry's will not defraud anybody, they are much too big and important to do that. They are an important part of the history of the Valley, and one of their claims is that they can supply everything from "Potato chips to Silicon chips". Yes, you can still buy a packet of Frito Lays, and a 27C040 EPROM at 9.00 PM, if you are trying to beat a board bring-up deadline. However, they are not really set up to do mail-order, they are not the Sears-Roebuck of the computer age.

The walk-in experience is however a "must do" for any visitor to the Valley. Most out-of-area visitors are stunned by the consumer electronics sections, but I personally found their Apple I exhibit and various other early electronic artifacts on display in showcases at the Sunnyvale store to be very effective (though I could probably do a more extensive exhibit section for as little as $10k, featuring Grids, Next Cubes, Pet Rocks, Ataris, HP 9845s, Xerox Altos, etc.).

Fry's has the most generous return policy I know of. Only problem is that when you return things, you have to stand in a long line before being served. Additionally, most, if not all of the sales staff are simply drones that only know one song -- "This is not my department!"

If I ever get out near one of their stores again I definately want to check it out in person. Have been reading cool stuff about them from their customers on USENET for years.

However, their Sunnyvale store *does* do all of the mail order and, so far, the telephone experience resembles a Saturday Night Live skit or trying to deal with an Amish telephone sales operation.

Still waiting for a tracking number.

Still waiting for an invoice number.

They said that I was going to be called, buy a manager, yesterday with that information.

Is Sunnyvale the "Amish country" of California?

Spoke too soon, when I got back from lunch I had a phone call from Mike Queenan (sp?) the store manager of Fry's in Sunnyvale!

Unfortunately, the UPS tracking number he gave me was WRONG. UPS lookup comes back as an invalid number. Have an e-mail in to the UPS tracking bot, but doubt it will help without a valid tracking number.

GuyMontag,

Wait a day and try the tracking number again. One time I got a UPS tracking number that had not been updated from a previous shipment to someone else. By the next day it worked fine.

Hi,
Well I have a friend in Sacremento as I type this, who claims the part number we are using at Fry's is for an AFR not an AFK chip The part number I have is 2742043 from a related thread... sigh... is this the same part number for the AMD-K6-III/333AFK.

They are ordering several, hope they come up as AMD-K6-III/333AFK and not some AFR chip

Ganda,
The thing is, well I'd love to, but well I bought 5 of em, and never thought I'd use em, but they are the coolest darned things... that and when I called a friend to schedule some racquetball I discovered he was away in Sacremento... well anyway his hotel is across the street from Fry's Sacremento... think he'll win our next match

But seriously, these things are so darned cool, it's gonna be tough to find someone who wants to part with one. Once they run an OS, they're very sharp.

Well, they finally charged my credit card yesterday (checked with my bank online), however the UPS tracking number they gave me still comes up as "invalid" on the UPS website.

Hopefully it will get here one of these days.

Shoutouts to Badflash! My order got to me in about 2 days.

12v to 19v PS is on the way from Patrick <plm@laescuela.com> and expecting a Codeman hacked IDE cable any day now too.

Flies could really learn a thing or 3 from these guys.

*UPDATE*

Package is now on the way. Finally decyphered the tracking number the Flies manager left on my VM (he had too many numbers). Package left Flies on 9 Aug., is now on the east coast not far from my place, but still one State away as of the last scan a few moments ago.

Still not sure if they got the order right, wil know when I open the package I guess.

Still waiting for IDE cable from Codeman, hopefully it will be in the mailbox when the K6-III arrives too. Paid by Pay-Pal on 08/05 for the cable, but you know the post office.

After that, will be all set for some serious hacking after all of this stairing!

The amazing journey of the K6-III...

Not rehashing Flie's experience, but they sent the little fellow out on 9 Aug. 2000 on 5 day ground UPS.

Yes, I know business days are the only ones that count in the 5 days.

It shows arriving in VA (not my house, but not far away at a hub) today, 17 Aug. 2000.

Hummmmmm..... 5 business days plus a weekend make 7 calendar days. Here I am at day 8 and still don't have the thing.

Perhaps I am the one that is nuts because the ONLY vendors I have been satisfied with in connection with this project are Badflash and Patrick (well, still have not tested the power supply, but at least he shipped when he said and I got the package quick).

Enough whining, back to work, maybe I get to do a little hacking tonight. Ooops, wait, still don't have the cable.

K6-III 333 AFK has arrived *sigh*. Hope it works.

Again, praise to Badflash and Patrick for being on top of their operations. If all goes well this thing should be running FreeBSD in my Jeep by the end of the month.

Now, if the other "in-stock" item that I ordered on 8/5 will ever get here I will be more happy. Yes, I saw a related post but 12 days for something that is touted as "in stock" is just messed up.

How much faster is the amd 333 mhz AFK chip in layman's answers?

I heard it's 2-3 times faster. does that mean the computer goes 2-3 times faster? i couldn't tell because i had ran it in a hard drive with a bad sector and it said that having a bad sector in a hd makes it run much much slower. thanks.

ASPguy,

In "laymans terms" it is a zillion times faster.

If you are doing HDD intensive tasks, like databases, a slow HDD will be noticeable in performance. If you are doing processor intensive tasks, like spreadsheets, then the slow HDD will not be that big of a deal.

Also, the amount of RAM you have will have some effect, to a point (not sure what that point is on this box yet).

The K6-III has a built in L2 cache, speeds things up robo-moucho and it is a P3 class chip, replacing a bad imitation of a regular pentium.
