Hi,
I have a friend who just called from Fry's in Sacremento, using part number 2742043 he said was listed on their computer as an AFR chip... is this the correct part number? Is there any technique to ordering the appropriate AMD-K6-III/333AFK from the sales floor (apparently an order must be made the picked up, if all AFR's my friend won't be very happy Suggestions appreciated

They're all labelled as AFR, but all that I've seen so far are actually marked AFK on the chip. From the other threads, it appears that AFRs also show up occasionally. The only way to get AFKs is to walk in and inspect the item at the counter, and return or ask for a replacement if it is an AFR.

The stock number is correct, I have an AFK that is enclosed in a plastic antistatic casing which was labeled with the stock number 2742043. The text on the label reads AMD-K6-III/333AFR 2.2V. However, it actually is an AFK as per the legend on the metal tab on the chip. It's probably been mislabeled because the stock is mixed grades, and K looks very similar to R unless closely inspected.

Hey guys, I posted yesterday how I ended up with some of the wrong chips. I will take the wrong chips back Friday and ask for the correct one's AFK. Funny thing, the boxes were marked AFR. I asked for AFK and was given AFR. Gotta luv Flies.

Hi,
Looks like you're both correct, my friend ordered 5 of the AFR's, and all were AFK's. Next problem is converting 5 I-Openers (1 mod 3, 4 mod 4's, no sw for cpu voltage sigh). My concern however isn't so much getting 2.0 or 2.2V but avoiding buring the I/O out from heat. I prefer to use the stock heatsink, any ideas on how to keep it cool enough without going to an active fan are appreciated.

What is so bad about using an active fan to cool the processor? The Lasagna does an adequate enough job, and isn't really all that loud.

Is this just an attempt to keep the number of moving parts down?

Hi,
It's an attempt to keep it quiet, simple and to limit moving parts which can fail (also I guess just for the sake of not paying $30 or so for a darned fan! the Lasagna is almost as much after shipping as I paid to buy the K6-III AFK/333 upgrade, if fans were under $10 and very quiet, it'd work (also they'd have to fit comfortably inside the I-Opener without cutting).

Thus far, I haven't seen any solution published, and I have seen several complaints about the Lasagna fan being noisy, these things are amazingly quiet with stock passive cooling

Kudzu,

My thinking is a combination of what justme said as well as keeping moving parts count down.

Mine will be always on in a Jeep Cherokee Sport. Researching parts for the isolated PS and want to keep the power draw down too.

When I bought the K6-IIIs at Fry's I had the same problem, explaining the difference between the two chips to the sales guy. At least in my case, the AFRs were labeled as 66MHz Frontside frequency, whereas the AFKs are labeled 95MHz. Much easier than trying to explain the chip markings, especially so since in most cases they are covered by the Fry's part number sticker.

justme,

The sunon fan is much better, $13.28 each + $6 shipping at http://www.gadgetpros.com/mini5vcooler.html

I have it on my IOs right now, it fits perfectly, no need to trim anything, it's running as quiet as a fly. It cools the CPU a lot better than the stock heatsink, and it also gives me a lot of room and air for my HD since the heatsink is out of the way. In my opinion, $32 for my 2 sunon fans were well spent.

Pepsi,
Thanks for the link. This may solve my concerns about the Lasagna fan being both too expensive and noisy...
