Alright, well I tried all the methods in my other post on trying to get the backlight to work... well when I was looking my iopener I noticed something got unsoldered and Im really hoping soldering it back will make my backlight work and ill have a nice working Iop again... It was a square block (looked like) not very tall and was soldiers on 2 points, on either side. So I can like fold it back and see the one side soldered. Im 16 and Ive never soldered before but could get someone who has. Just curious on what type of solder to use, and if its safe just to solder it back in and place and should this fix my backlight problem? I really hope so...

Likely, you can get away without using any additional solder. You need a low temperature soldering iron with a very small tip. Temperature regulated irons are preferred. (Do NOT use a soldering gun!!!)

If the component that came loose is marked on the board with a 'C' number, try not to apply too much heat. Just enough to get it to stick again. If it has an 'R' number, the heat problem isn't quite as severe. Try not to heat it too much though, you could end up lifting it right off the board (As well as the pad it's supposed to be connected to!).

Using a very small tweezers to hold the component in place, apply heat to one side. Place the tip of the iron at the juncture of the component and the pad it need to connect to. This will heat both at once. Let it cool for a few seconds and then repeat the same on the other side. Do this even if it was still connected on that side! Lifting it caused a poor joint.

If you DO know someone with experience, have them watch you and offer advice. Do the job yourself though. That way, the next time you won't need any help.

Good luck!

brokeniop,

A picture or more detailed component description (color, numbers on it and the board...) and it's location on the board would be helpful to determine if it might help your backlight prob. (I toasted an smt fuse (F1) on one of my iO's and had to replace it (I had no backlight either))

At any rate, you can also use conductive epoxy, available at electronics shops, in place of solder. Just use a tiny bit on the loose component in case you need to remove it, making sure that you dont inadvertantly trace to any other components with the epoxy. It is kinda sticky and somewhat messy to work with.

Sounds like you have not soldered before, if so, IMHO, I wouldn't touch the board with an iron. Not a great place to practice.

good luck

If you have never tried soldering before, try getting a junk board somewhere, and do your practice on it first. Radio Shack sells all sorts of soldering stuff. It's really not hard, but like everything else, it requires practice to become good at it. Hacking any electronic stuff will make necessary, good soldering skills. Practice......
