Neat file transfer
MP3 player - $25

A look at anandtech 'hot deals' shows Best Buy/Offrice max selling an MP3 player for $50 with $30 rebate = 20~25$. This is a parallel port unit which has 32Mb, and transfers files [data] as well as songs and voice recording. Unit uses smartmedia, so the smartmedia socket hack is truly unnessesary with this deal. Some say u can get $30 rebate AND 5" B/W TV rebate from offrice max!

I picked up two of these last night. It has two rebates - one for $30 from DLink and one for a 5" BW TV from OfficeMax. Problem is, both rebates require the original UPC, so you can only get one or the other. I even called OfficeMax's 1-800 number for rebates and they won't budge on having the original. The TV sells for $25 at CircuitCity so I opted for the cash.

So, it's a $20 32 MB MP3 player. It DOES store ANY kind of file and can be used for file transfers (it hooks up to the parallel port). It has a SmartMedia socket but the 32MB it comes with is on-board (not SmartMedia). You can add up to 32MB more of SmartMedia (I wish I could pull the Sandisk out of my IO and use it :)

I'm not sure how useful it would be as a file transferring agent for the IO (my IO is networked already), but it's a damn nice MP3 player for $20. BTW, the transfer software works on 95/98/NT only.

I can't find that price anywhere! The lowest I have seen is $99.00.
Where can I find the $50.00 price?

I found it! $49.99 at officemax. They don't advertise the price in any way. You have to call a store to learn about it.

Actually a call to D-Link tells me D-Link will accept copies of the reciept/UPC. Give prigonal to OM for the TV - get both.

If ur worried I would call and confirm - but I agree I'll take the $30 over 'radio TV' anyday.

Ok I got mine at OM.
Apparrently the rebate was instant.
It cost 21.xx! Last one they had in the store it seems (Hempstead, Long Island)
Now I can get a free crappy TV with the original receipt.

Ok, I got one but has anyone actually connected one of these up to an I-Opener?

They require you to set your printer port to ECP in the Bios. This requires a DMA channel. I have a version 3 and there are only 2 DMA Channels available (1 and 3). Both are used by the sound chip.

So ECP or Sound not both.

Has any one had any luck with this?

Don't know. I installed it without 1st making port ECP - when I switched it I have 5 DMAs availablw [V4], unit was happy, but file x-fer would not complete. As I am upgrading [ruined OS experimenting; have to re-load:)], I'll have to get back to you on it. Works fine on PC.

Could these boys have disabled some part of the port so it can use bi-directional printers but no file /mp3 x-fers? Has anyone tried anything else which requires ECP on it and had failure?

I just assumed it would work on the IO without a problem. Maybe I'll install the software on the IO this weekend and see what happens.

dual800,

Get it in writing...I e-mailed d-link to get a written response to send in. Here's their response:

Our $30 rebate is not valid with any other offer as stated on the coupon. Photocopies are not acceptable in this case.

I would rather have the $30 than the TV...

Has anyone got one of these working with their IO? When its hooked up, the player says that it is connected to the host, but I can't seem to get it to download a song to the player.

If this is the DMP-100, I have one. Great hardware, the software is AWFUL! Don't even try to use it on Windows Millenium.
