I am reading about upgrading the IO with an AMD chip. But what does the afk mean? I know there are many posts about this subject, but none really answers basic questions-
-Which chip will work?
-What jumper switches need to be changed?
-Will the Tennmax (sp?) fan that works on the Rise 266 chip work on an AMD chip?
Thanks for all previous help. I now have a working Iopener (including sound) with hard drive bracket and IDE cable that I personally made/modified. Next goal is to mount USB Ethernet and ps/2 splitter in base NICELY. Will post pix when the project is more complete.

What version of IO do you have? The answer will determine how many hardware mods you'll have to do. (Netpliance, and Quanta, the motherboard manufacturer, have revised the motherboard over the past few months. The newer revisions are easier to upgrade than the older ones.)
I'm currently trying to get a K6-III-333 running in a V1 and running into some difficulties (most likely of my own creation until I can prove otherwise!) which I believe can eventually be solved. The K6-III-333 is definitely known to work in a V3/4/5, however.

Hi jplatt50,
All you need to do is change the settings on SW4 to run at a VCC appropriate to the cpu you put in. This is documented elsewhere quite well in posts by Turbo3 and LinuxGuru. You do not need to solder anything (well perhaps later if you have lockups maybe a resister, but that's if you have problems).
