IBM Thin Client for $50

I dunno if anyone posted this before, http://www.hitechcafe.com/eshop/product.asp?dept%5Fid=14&sku=8361%2D100+SERIES has it for $50.

Is it hackable? All I can find is that it has 8 megs of RAM and 1 MB video, but it uses standard simms, IBM's site say that it is upgradable to 32 megs (why not 64 or 128?), and video to 2 mb. There's a PCMCIA slot in the front, and separate mouse and keyboard ports.

Even if it's not hackable, it's still neat to play with for a LAN.

Is this the one that requires an as/400 to operate?

I think so, but I know nothing about AS/400, so without an AS/400, it won't boot?

I got one from Egghead for $16 plus shipping & handling. (Shipping & handling was pretty steep--$25.)

Supposedly, you can use Linux or NT as a boot server for this device.

I used http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/NC-HOWTO.html to install the server software on my Linux box, but haven't gotten around to trying the IBM client out.

Hope the link helps.

Good link.

So it will run with Linux, NT 4 Terminal server, or Win2k Server as well as AS/400.

http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/pubs/html/netcom/pub.htm -- Get the documentation here.

Might be a good way to do a web-only terminal.
