Dear :CueCat member,

We've been alerted to a security breach in our system that may have
exposed certain members' names and email addresses. As one of the
members who may be susceptible, we want to explain to you how you may
be affected and what we are doing to rectify the situation.

Digital:Convergence has secured the site and is conducting a thorough
security examination to ensure the safety of its information.

As a result of this breach, unauthorized third parties may have been
able to gather your name and email address. You may receive
unsolicited emails (a.k.a. spam) from unrecognized sources. If you do
not recognize the source, please delete the email immediately. You can
also go to www.cauce.org, which provides information on spam and
spam-blocking software programs that will prevent unwanted emails from
reaching your desktop.

In light of these developments, we would like to give you a $10 gift
certificate to RadioShack. If you are interested in receiving this
certificate, please fill out a short form on www.crq.com/**********.html and
we will mail it to you.

Digital:Convergence values our members and reiterates our commitment
not to share your personal identifying information with third
parties. We regret any inconvenience you may experience. We have fixed
the problem and are taking extra precautionary steps to ensure it
won't happen again.

This is actually a wolf in sheep's clothing if that makes any sense. The rumor is that there were no hackers at all. Apparently Digital Convergence's motive behind cooking up this scare story and giving away $10 to all CueCat users, is to be able to link CueCat-refistered email addresses with real names and mailing addresses. As soon as you sign up to get a $10 certificate, Digital Convergence has a profile of you that includes your email address, your name, your mailing address, and a list of every barcode that you have ever scanned using CueCat. A list of this magnitude would make even DoubleClick drool.

The moral of the day is, if you used Digital Convergence software, you are a sucker and you should uninstall that crap ASAP.

They have your name, address and e-mail address, but that was already with Radio Shack when you got the scanner. They don't get the list of barcodes unless you are stupid enough to use their software to scan barcodes while you are online.

In short, $10 for my name and address is fine by me. I'd be willing to do it any number of times, since it is already in the telephone directory.

They have no way of linking your name & address which you gave Radio Shack, to the email addy you gave Digital Convergence (assuming you install their software and sign up for an account).

In order to fix this strategic mistake, which could cost them millions, Digital Convergence cooked up a scare story and urged their loyal customers to sign up for a $10 Radio Shack Gift Certificate. Chances are, they won't send you crap. All they need is a full database, with all its columns filled up and fully coordinated.
