Hacking the I-Opener 2001

Can anybody shed light on this? I still think it is worth hacking for the money. I figure I can hack this one for less than $75.00.

My guess is BIOS chip, Hardrive, mounting kit and away we go.

Anybody else know for sure?

I may be wrong but from what I heard, the new I-Opener is not new but the same as the first except for maybe the color and most important, the bios version. Oh yeah , almost forgot. GOOP!!!!! As far as the ide header being cliped no one that I know has confirmed it. Personaly for $300 I can buy a NIC ($199) and a cheap 15" monitor. At least the NIC already has a CD rom. All you have to ad is a HD and since you can fit a 3.5 drive you can save money on that part too. I have one and (excuse the girly talk but) IT'S VERY CUTE!!!

I haven't hacked a I-Opener 2001 because of the price (WTG Netpliance, now if only you don't scare your TARGET audience away with THAT price!). I DID get up close and personal with an I-Opener 2001 at Circuit City, which was an actual "out-of-box" I-Opener being used for a demo. I removed the memory door to look at the BIOS and there was no "goop" on it. In a nutshell, it looks like a v5 (and is probably just as hackable) with the new "I-Opener 2001" QNX + Netpliance crap distro. The installed software has changed and it now features an interactive demo mode and... Surprise, surprise - says "I-Opener 2001" on the title screen.

As for the IDE pins, who knows... Clipping pins makes a big mess (little metal shards everywhere) and makes "recycling" returned I-Openers impossible, so I doubt Netpliance is going to try that again.

Ya shudda been cruisin' the tech area. Got my I-2001 and it was a standard V5. A bunch of people have ordered chip and some of them are V4's. Go figure. I just got mine hacked with a K6-III+ up to 300MHz. I'm too tired now, but tomorrow I'll see if I can get it to the rated 450. See the tech area on K6-III+ for 59 bucks.
