Hey everybody, I need some social engineering help. My local CompUSA has the new I-opener 2001's and in the aisle has the new display model hooked up. They *also* have an older display model from before the change. So what I need to know is, what should I say to get the manager to sell me the old demo model, and how much should I pay? (obviously it should be less than $99 right?)

One of the ones I bought about 4-5? months ago (Demo V-1) I just inplugged it from the wall wart and took the i-Opener and keyboard(Attached) straight to the cashier with the intent of purchasing it, Had the old SKU# 274376 memorized by now (I doubt it will work anymore but it may?) and they rang it up. I paid cash ($99+ tax) and went thru dipstick security at the door. Put it in my car and went back in the store and told sales dude "Forgot the wallwart" he unlocked the lower cabinet and unplugged it and gave it to me. Was a kool, legal and very smooth operation!
I found out couple days later Hardware manager was REALLY REALLY pissed!

(PS this did not have the security alarm sensor wire on it.)

Haha, thats a pretty funny story.

Good news all: I went in last night (Nov 4, 2000) and finally found a decent manager, who just opened the case unhooked the security cables, and stated: "You want this as-is? There's no power-supply" So I said, "Yeah at a resonable price, I know this "model" was going for $99" So he says, "As-is, no return, 50 bucks." "OK" says I. He takes the thing up to the cashier, tells her how to ring it up, I pay with Credit card, and leave on my merry way.

Got home, hooked up my old power supply, and it works fine, I don't foresee any problem hacking this one like the last 2. Thats right, I now have 3 functioning I-openers all bought after the hoopla broke out. I hope to have one in my car as a GPS/MP3 device, and the other two as network nodes in my house when I get DSL and a home network functioning.
I foresee one as working like an Internet-Phone device to cut down on Long-Distance, and checking my e-mail from the living room. We'll see.
