Curious to what I can do without an imod kit. I ordered my kit 7 weeks ago and haven't recieved it or recieved a reply to my emails or phone calls. So I'm wondering what I can do with the excisting i-opener. Do I have an option of loading some form of qnx onto the flash? And if so, how?

I dont' use an i-mod kit. actually i don't use any kit.

i just simply cut the rf shield on the side so that my harddrive can fit better. then i'll cute a piece off the heatsink so that the ide connector can fit. i don't have to mount the harddrive because it fit snuggly in.

Be very careful when your harddrive is not mounted. This discussion is in multiple tthreads on this forum. If the drive happens to move and short something out you could have a doorstop. Also heat may be an issue.
Also, many people have had harddrive failure when they had there drives mounted "snuggly". The laptop harddrives can't take much force on their outside shell.

You probably will need a ps2 splitter to allow the use of a real keyboard and mouse, necessary to get into the BIOS settings. There are many different ways to mount hard drives...mine is outside the case in one of mine. Be aware this thing runs hot enough as it is without cutting up the heat-sink. The lasagna fan solution is the easiest and the nicest looking. The stock heat-sink is a POS...any fan solution is superior.

I mount mine to the inside of the RF shield using 2 screws. You can enlarge 2 of the breather holes a little and the screws will line up just fine. I use a 12" cable and run it under the drive and this prevents damage/contact with the board.

I replaced the bios chip with one from Badflash, and also got a customized IDE cable from him. Other than that, everything else I did myself. I mounted my 9mm thin 10 gig Fujitsu drive to the existing heatsink standoffs (throwing the heat sink away) using a couple of plastic miniblind brackets. I picked up an $8 5V fan from a parts house to go on my Winchip 2, which plugged right in (no soldering required for the chip, although I did solder the leads for the fan). I didn't have to cut any holes in the case either, and 128 megs of ram just plugged right in.
You don't have to get a kit to mount your drive. Look in all the misc. junk you probably have in the garage and I'm sure you can come up with something innovative.

Resist the urge to be lazy (not putting you down, we all have that!) and read through previous posts on this board. There is a search function available that will help.

It's terrible that so many people are not getting any satisfaction on their IMOD order. I sent a couple e-mails asking a question because I was considering getting a kit, but I never got a reply. Consequently I didn't go that route.

I'll leave you with something my dad instilled in me from a very young age. "We're Americans, we can do ANYTHING." Innovate!

Funny how we think we're experts but yet these appliances are a common trade and business overseas.. in this case being taiwan. to them putting together computer board is seen and paid lowly as a basic occupation.

We're Americans, what is important is perception, which will create our realities.

no pun intended..just a philosophical comment.
