Parting out my IO

After spending uncounted hours trying to get this thing to run without locking up I give in. My IO is a type 3/4 with the dual voltage supply, K6-III chip, RISE 266 chip, and a BadFlash BIOS chip with custom drive cable. The IO has nothing broken on it and is not junk! The only obvious mod' is the heatsink's altered mounting holes. The correct SM resistors for the K6 are in place. (Extras included.) I have a 4.3Gig Hitachi laptop hard drive with Win98 on it. The IO boots to the HD fine. It just locks up after between 2-20 minutes. Voltage issue I suspect. Not heat related. I have spent way too much time with this problem. Time to move on.

This is not a business transaction: I want no money. Trades for all or part of my IO are welcome. (An Epods or Webplayer would be nice!) Make an offer. el_kabong@bigfoot.com

If you want to give it one last try on the i-opener, send it to me and I will have a look at it. ASPguy sent me his unit to upgrade and the shipping was only around $8 each way (we both live in California). Let me know if you are interested. You will be out two way shipping but may get a working unit out of it. Hopefully you kept the original packing material.

El_Kabong,
This suggestion is only if you do not have the original box and filler,
I do a lot of dumpster divin' at some local major electronic assembly/production area's and notice TONS of shipping materials being thrown away....(along with some rather kool stuff )
If you need shipping materials ASK to go look behind some major retail stores if there are no producion area's for scrap styrofoam peanuts AND sections of molded styrofoam filler and an appropriate size box. Be creative and construct your own shipping container....Just be sure it is secure and the i-Opener won't shift around inside the box.
Just be sure to ask for permission if you go behind any business....don't want you to get busted for tresspassing....

Also don't give up! be persistant with the mod project on the i-Opener it just may take a little time to figure it out! There are some good folks here who enjoy helping others by sharing info and advice.

I am in need of a leg, or the stand that goes with the iopener. Mine was stolen for some strange reason at a computer show. If you still want to part yours out plz drop me a line. Thx

What was your iopener doing at a computer store? was it on display for netpliance or something. we had seen an iopener at comdex but then it disappeared days later. check out turbo3's pics.

iopener has just been received. I have made a few changes and will run an overnight test. Send me the Win98 CDROM key that matches the version you have on the disk. Somehow I managed to complete the install without it but it starts a bit strange so I may want to do another install to see if that clears it up. My current theory is that you had too big of a load on the 2.5v ref as a result of using a 10K ohm R343 instead of a 102K one. I have changed both R342 and R343 as well as putting in a small value current limit resistor (0.012). The sum of R342 and R343 should be greater than or equal to 127K ohms to keep the current equal or less than the original value. The ratio between the two sets the lowest vcore you can get. I have vcore at 1.84v right now.

Good news! Was starting to think that IO was cursed or something. Not a superstitious guy but.... :')

Without pushing my luck too far could you set it to the best speed that you think it can do and be stable? Since I plan to use the IO at work I won't be needing any switches to adjust the FSB or clock speed, just two solder dabs on the likely switch pads would be great. Since you're the IO Guru I figure you'd know the most stable/fastest settings. If you're busy with other things please disreguard my request. That it works at all is enough!

It was still running the Bill Gates crash video this morning. I still have trouble using a USB ethernet connection. It locks up or reboots at times. I will remove and measure (and perhaps replace) the other two resistors you added tonight and see if that helps. I even put in a K6-III+ and still had the same problem. All my testing is done with a fan/heatsink on the CPU. I will also try just your modified heatsink but it does block the cooling to Q16 since it covers it. It would be nice if the heatsink could somehow make contact with the top of Q16. Thanks for the key. I will redo the install and see if that helps any.

Is there some reason you did not go with a fan/heatsink on the CPU (like the $10 Sunon)? I don't have any experience running at high CPU speeds (300+) using just the stock heatsink. It is not that the CPU needs the cooling but it does blow air around Q16 and the capacitor.

I was going to settle the heat issue after I got the CPU issue taken care of. Never got that far. I was going to try a few heat removal ideas on for size. Even thought of an Orb cooler. Finding the 12volts needed to power a cooler is no problem.
From the sound of things you are having the same lockup problems I had. Cursed I tell you.

Of course feel free to take anything off the hard drive that you'd like a copy of. :')

Thanks again.

I think I am about done with your unit. Other then the hangs during large file transfers everything else seems ok now. The vcore is at 1.84 volts. The K6-3 III 333MHz is installed and running at 300 MHz. I am NOT using your modified heat sink and I do not recommend you do either. All my testing is done with a standard socket 7 heatsink/fan combo running from an external 12v supply. I recommend you use something like the Sunon cooler which is what I use on my 550MHz K6-III+ iopener. Max temp is showing 113F as I type this note on it with Windows Media playing in the background. But the unit is laying face down (using external monitor) on my work bench with the back open. Network connection is through a USB Ethernet adapter.

I noticed you had added some wires to the IDE connector, perhaps for an activity LED. I have removed them and rewired the nearby iopener "phone" LED to be the activity light. You will see two cuts where I disconnected the LED from the normal iopener logic.

You should have no trouble with current since I gave you a 0.012 ohm current limit resistor.

Please do not run it without a fan on the CPU that blows some air across Q16. I have installed MBProbe so you can see the current temp. Again do NOT use the heatsink you modified. The way you were mounting it in no way made for a good contact with the top of the CPU and it only traps the heat around Q16.

I will try to mail it back to you in the next day or two. (This note was entered on your unit running at 300MHz.)

Turbo3,

As a long time reader and user of this boards info, I have come to know and trust your advice - and it was this boards information that enabled me to sucessfully add a Toshiba 3GB drive as well as a WinChip2 with lasagna cooler to my v1 iOp. After running the mod'd unit for several months now (95% of the time on 24/7), I have become aware that the unit is not being regularly used by me or my family. My 11 year old daughter complains that IT IS TOO SLOW and uses our Acer Travelmate 732TXV and our iMac revB before she will use the iOp. I have decided that I need a new processor, and I have read many things about the K6 II cpu's and am leaning towards installing one. As the person who is touted to be the premier board solderer(sp?) on this board, I am coming to you with a proposition.---

If I send you my v1 iopener along with a new K6 II, would you do the install for me in trade for the WinChip2 that you replace? I would pay shipping - and would allow you all the time you need. I would ask for your recommendation as to which cpu I should install in the v1, and I will scour for the deal and purchase one, then ship.

I will look for your response here, then we can go to e-mail if you like. thanks...

El_Kabong: Ok your unit is all packed up, addressed, and ready to go. I will drop it off tomorrow morning so you should have it back by mid week. Resist the urge to power it up until you get some cooling on the CPU/Q16.

blunlimited: The best processor is the new K6-III+ available from tigerdirect SKU # CP2-K63-450P C for $50 plus S&H.

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-Details.asp?sku=CP2-K63-450P%20C

You will need one of the resistor kits from one of the group buys that people are doing here. The critical part is the 0.012 ohm current limit resistor. I do not have any time left this year but perhaps could look at it in January when I am back in the country. The nice thing about the K6-III+ is that you can vary the multiplier in realtime from Windows and set a default value in Autoexec.bat.

TURBO3-

If you get some time in January, drop me a message and we will get my machine fixed up- I will get the AMD K6 III 450 - I have found it at a couple of sites at a good price. I will have one waiting for the install.

Thanks for replying

Ok, I am in the Philippines right now. Be sure to buy the plus version of the K6-III. I brought my 500MHz iopener with me. After three take offs and landings my copper heatsink came lose and shorted out so the iopener would power up for a few seconds then shutdown. After opening it up and re-attaching the heatsink with some tape it is now up and running just fine. I even fired up the Delorme RWE mapping program with my GPS unit and it correctly located me in Manila. I was surprised to see that Delorme had included a low res map of the world in the US version.
