I Opener 2001
Can it be modified to work as a PC?

I read some info from the NetApplicance web site that they had modified the i-opener to prevent anyone from making changes to it such as the addition of your imod 2 kit. Is this true? I purchased today 12/16/00 the unit at CC for $199 and did not sign any agreement for their service. I would like to make the mod 2 kit additions to this as it will be my parents ( 60 yrs old) first pc. They r on a strict budget and i intend to load Linux/Mandrake 7.2 on it. Can anyone make suggestions as to what else i will need to modify on the i opener.

Raydi, I HIGHLY recommend you to bypass the Imod 2 kit and go to Badflash instead. I have nothing against the Imod 2, except that it seems they have so many orders and you may have to wait until your order is processed. Badflash makes great custom IDE cables, which you'll need one of, in addition to pre-flashed BIOS chips, which you might consider. You can flash it yourself, but if it gets dorked up you'll still need to get one of these so you might want to just order one anyhow. Badflash shipped my cable and chip quickly, about 2 weeks from my original order, and that was even with my personal check. Make the hard drive brackets yourself. I made mine from miniblind hardware, and my 9mm 10gig hard drive is mounted to the original heatsink standoffs. I went to the local electronic parts store and for $9 bought a 5V fan for cooling to replace the bulky and inefficient heatsink.
Bottom line is, you don't need the IMOD-2 kit to 'hack' your IO.

Has anyone received an I-MOD3 kit yet? I have just placed an order, based on Codeman's post from the 15th saying they are available. Looks like a more elegant solution, but don't want to wait too long to get it. I saw some posts regarding previous shipment problems, is this still the case?

Thanks for the info Friar. I have already sent 35 via pay pal to codeman for the imod 3 kit ( premature but i wanted to get the io ready for my parents for xmas ) i haven't received any replies to my emails to him about receipt of payment. I can't fault him since he' probably going a little crazy right know just as we all r. I will take your advise and send $$$ to badflash this evening. Maybe i can still get it running in time for xmas.
