How many of us are there? I was wondering how many people are still active in hacking or moding their Iopeners or still take interest in it as a hobbie. Im sure it would be interesting for most of us, if you could please post your name and/or alias just for the records, the mods you have done, and a message about yourself if you wish. Ill go first.

Parasyght a.k.a "dave"

I live in long beach, CA and i work at Circuit City were i have access to vast amounts of neat electronics. I am a college student majoring in industrial design and enjoy playing counterstrike, a video game, after work. I havent turned on my tv ever since i started playing. Im adicted. The iopener has bee a fun experience for me, i love finding new things to do with it, like play video games:)

My name's friar and I have a V3b IO that I take back and forth to work occasionally. I don't like how my employer wants to see EVERYTHING I do on the computers at work, so I just use my own! I work in a power plant, with vast amounts of time spent just sitting around waiting for something to go wrong, so whether I read a book, watch TV, or surf the net I'm still doing my job and staying awake too. (By the way, our power plant is NOT getting rich on the power shortages here in California, as we work under a contract and only get a set amount paid per megawatt of power. Bummer.)

I went for the easy mod on my IO. I replaced the BIOS chip with one from Badflash. I plugged in 128 megs of RAM, and replaced the existing processor with a Winchip 2. I added a 10 gig Fujitsu hard drive with a custom cable from Badflash. The drive is mounted to the original heatsink standoffs by brackets I custom formed from miniblind hardware(!). I ditched the heatsink and soldered in a cheap 5V fan for cooling. I currently run the full version of Win 98 SE. I replaced the keyboard with a small keyboard with integral touchpad and carry the whole shebang in a laptop case which makes it very portable.

Everyone who sees it thinks it's very cool, which of course, was another goal .

BTW, lots of old arcade emulator games work on the IO, whereas the modern 3D games will not (because of the DS screen). For an old fart like me (over 40 -- <<oh jeez we have a GEEZER on the board!>>) the arcade games are enjoyable.

My name is Anthony, I live in Fresno which is in the middle of California. It is the main city between Los Angeles and San Fransisco. I studied economics at UCLA of which the early days of being on the irc and www was more than attending classes. I regret every moment of it.

Anyhow, while going to school i had wanted to web design to make money on the side only to find out that it's what i'll do after college. least to say the 6 years i spent in college didn't help me one bit at making money.

I work at a dot com as it's web developer and network administrator. actually i do everything since it's a startup. i also pretend that i'm the person in charge, so at times i'll call myself the director of engineering or the person in charge that decides if some solicitor gets my time or not. most of the time i just brush them off because of their intrusive techniques in trying to get to the boss(me). like they talk as though they already know the person in charge.

so i got into playing the iopener from reading a column in the Fresno Bee Newspaper. I immediately head out to Circuit city to pay in advance for 1, had my gf paid for another 1. Sadly say after 3 months, the damn thing hadn't came yet. I finally purchase them over at compusa. then circuit city started getting them. and the funny thing was that they would let me pick up and purchase their iopeners without a special order. so i would simply buy out the 2 that they had special order for myself. and they would in turn kept on ordering it. i knew it was okay cause the girl said she'll just keep my special order active and that i could purchase what they had in stock. so i did that and that's how i ended up with 15 iopeners at $99 a piece. originally i hadn't plan on sellin them but after realizin that my time was spent away from my desktop and coding, i chose to sell off all but just 3 iopeners. i also had the dlink usb ethernet craze too.i bought 5 of those, and 3 amd cpus, and 6 hardrive cables. was costing me too much. i also bought 5 web surfers and 1 webpal.

anyhow, i'm looking forward to going into politics and becoming a future president of the united states. after seeing this years candidates, i see myself very fit compared to them.

my v3 iopener was moded by turbo3 for the amd 333. it has a vcore of 2.17 and i'm running it at 3x95mhz and the only cooling it has is a sunon cpu fan.

what do you have the amd jumpers at if your running the mod? and what is your vcore? thanks.

Best person to ask for a generic count would be badflash.

How may bios upgrades / reflashes have you been selling lately?

Northstar, i didn't unstand what you were talking about with the generic count.

To answer your question, i was organizing an amd group buy. we had gathered 40 kits. i have 3 kits to myself. That was the only mod I did. Didn't sell bios upgrades or flashes, but i've flashed them for myself like many people on the post. Many also chose to skip this process and purchase the chips from badflash.com

Still messing with mine from time to time. Have two of the following config:

WinChip2 overclocked to 225MHz
TenMaxx fan
6.4MB Toshiba HD
128 SODIMM
SMC USB 10/100 Ethernet Adapter
Flashed BIOS via software
Win98SE

Currently I'm trying to hook up the ethernet internally by activating the 2nd USB port. I now need the USB open so I can use a USB type KVM switch. I originally tried to use a PS/2 type KVM switch (IOGear MiniView 4-Port) by connecting it to the PS/2 "Y" cable I've been using to connect a mouse and keyboard, but that doesn't work (does anybody know a KVM switch that does work with a "Y" adapter correctly?).

I've got the i-ops on movable arms floating at either side of my main workstation monitor. With the KVM switch I'll be able to flip control of the mouse/keyboard back and forth as desired with a hot key. Great for not interrupting your main task while consulting web pages, emails, ICQ's, diagrams. Each has their own processor and screen...makes for an awesome workspace. Multitasking as it should be.

Anybody have any KVM experience of experience with the USB port hack?

My name is Josh, nickname bu11et. I'm from a small town south of Kansas City, Missouri. Currently I'm a senior computer science in northeast Missouri, at Truman State University. I got my IO over the past summer from CC after waiting several months. I haven't had much time to mess with it, but I've added a 2.1 gb hard drive, the audio out hack, Win98 and Winamp. I also got a usb ethernet adapter, usb digital speakers, and a usb hub. Well, after the fun of the hack, I've decided it isn't exactly what I want. Thus I'm trying to trade my IO for an original or slightly modded Websurfer Pro. I want to surf the net on my TV. If you're interested, email me at joshhighley@hotmail.com I made a post about this in the Websurfer General Posts section.

Narmi here,(real name: Imran) one of few Canadians with an iOpener (I only know one other). Drove down to Bellingham WA from Vancouver BC to pick it up (online order).

My iO is a v1, same as Codeman's (180MHz winchip!). I'm going the cheap route:

800MB HD mounted with a cut up CD-R
$5 sunon slim cooler
HD Cable made from free samples http://www.fcibasics.com/
2nd serial port made from free samples http://www.maximic.com/
$10 parallel port ethernet adapter (yes it really sucks)
Audio line out (cheap method - solder to onboard op amp)

I've killed it twice, but got it repaired both times (whew!). First time it was just a blown fuse, second time it was a blown MOSFET.

I'm gonna use it to transfer files to and from my Rio and digital camera, as well as a MP3 player for my bedroom (once I get a USB NIC).

Any other Canadians out there?

Name's Jim Barr. I live in Buffalo Grove, IL.

I enjoy:
*Satellite TV (I personally don't have any difficulties with DAVE (I subscribe), but some friends of mine do! )
*Palm OS PDA's (I own a Palm Vx, but my first was a Pilot 1000. Actually, a Casio Z-7000, but I don't expect anyone to know about them!)
*ReplayTV (You gotta get one of these!!!)
*Computers in general (I have two 333 MHz Pentium III-class machines connected to the 'net via Linksys router and a cable modem, an Amstrad CP/M computer, and now, an i-Opener)
*Ham radio (Call sign is N9ONL. I'm not really active now. Packet Radio was my original draw, but the Internet pretty much took over my interest.)

My iOpener was purchased already modified:
*BIOS: not sure of the version, but the chip is "gooped" and aparantly re-flashed
*RAM: Stock 32mb
*Hard Drive: IBM Laptop 3.2gb externally mounted, connected with a custom cable.
*Keyboard: "Y" connector for a full-sized keyboard and mouse
*Network Connection: TRENDware USB to Ethernet adapter
*OS: Right now, just DOS. I am in the middle of re-installing Windows 98 after a nasty bout with some viruses.
*Startup screen: I changed the graphic and re-flashed the BIOS. It now has a nice i-Opener logo with the word "Hacked" across the top.

An aside: when I first saw the i-Opener, I simply fell in love. It is so elegantly built. The design has a very high "cool factor". It was so funny when I bought it (and hadn't told my wife about it yet) and when she finally saw it, she asked "Where's the box?" "What box?" I asked. "The CPU box." Hee Hee! Even she was impressed by the sleakness of it. Sure, the screen isn't the greatest, but for a couple hundred bucks and a bit of work, this puppy will be a fantastic machine!

Well, I'm NOT from Vancouver...but I'm *very* close. Abbotsford.
The only I-Opener that I've purchased is the one I picked up on eBay for a friend of mine. What I *do* have, though, is:
A Websurfer Pro - Added SIIG IDE card, 4 Gig HDD, Win ME, 2 extra CPU fans mounted inside the case, and a 10BT 3COM NIC
I had to do some cool fabrication to get both cards in...

A Virgin WebPlayer - Haven't even cracked the case on this one, yet...

An ePods - This is my favourite toy, by far! Added a 128 MB CompactFlash card, did the basic control-panel hack, and have loaded TONS of software on it...Although I still haven't been able to get a number of them working properly (Doom, Quake, Handwriting Recognition). The "MS Paint-like" program called Canvas is very nice. Also makes a great note-taker with both PocketWord and Voice Recorder. Still looking for an inexpensive wireless solution...

I'm also in the early stages of installing a PII 266 with an LCD sceen in my Civic, for playing MP3s, DVDs, GPS, etc.
For those interested in doing the same, take a look at the BBS at http://www.mp3car.com . My username is the same there (appended with a "?") as it is here.

What the hey...

Perplexer aka Steve

Did tech support / DB stuff / misc troubleshooting for an insurance company for 8+ years, was laid off the beginning of this year. Given a decent severance package and pension, so I've taken some time off for my projects (read: IO, etc.) I'd seen the IO at Circuit City, before the slashdot article, and thought it was a neat gizmo. I have an LCD screen fetish. After the slashdot article, I ran out to Circuit City and grabbed two. I've picked up a couple v4b units since then.

IO #1:
V3 IO (Circuit City)
Bios flashed in an Abit BH6
Winchip2 @ 200MHz
IBM 8.4 gig HD
Tennmax IOp cooler
selfmade HD bracket and IDE cable (blue activity LED)
Fellowes "laptop-style" mouse touchpad
Dauphin little keyboard
98Lite
Buttonpuncher line-out
RS232 mod to RJ11 to Rand McNally GPS
D-Link 802.11b USB receiver
DirectPad cable (parallel port to Sony Playstation controller - for Winamp playlist control)
Mounted in-car. MP3 and GPS have served me well on road trips. Soon to be added: IR remote control.

IO #2:
V4b (Circuit City)
64M RAM
AMD K63-333AFK
12.0GB Fujitsu HD
milled heatsink for HD mount
IDE cable w/ blue LED
r_fl_z dual serial board
Work-in-progress. This one is kicking my ass; only get right channel on audio-out, and GPS doesn't work. But these things make it fun, right?

Yeah, I've also got an ePod which I use with Terminal Services, and a Websurfer which I use for my satellite hobby. I'm happiest when one of my oddball ideas turns into a successful project. I should have paid more attention in my high school electronics class, because now I'm playing catch-up.

I love having neat gadgets around, and usually buy them if the price is right. Then I tire of them, and put them up on eBay. But my IOs will never go away :)

I'm an "old timer" that recently dug my IOs out of storage.

I have a v1 IO (purchased direct from Netpliance, pre-TOS), and a v3(I believe - gooped BIOS, IDE pins intact) from CC, ordered the same day as the other, and arrived some six weeks later. Made a copy of the v1 BIOS and burned it into the other.

I lost interest in the IO for a while, but just recently found a use for them in my ham shack. (One as a FreeDOS/Linux machine, one as a W98 machine.) Will soon build up the Badflash RS-232 boards for them.

Still trying to figure out a way to mount the hard drives; I want to keep the stock heat sink intact. (No cutting holes in the back, please.)

/http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Product_ID=4687&CATID=44 . I *was* going to hang it where the rear view mirror now sits, but I figured that would be list a l-i-t-t-l-e intrusive, so I think I'm just going to plunk it down on the dash, and have my wife sew up a cover for it (it folds flat).

ttn1 or ttn2, lost password for ttn2 and entered wrong email address on signup. crap.

I started almost at ground zero. I ordered 2 Ios from netpliance in March of last year. Both were v3 and both were gooped. I used a hair drier to remove the goop and flashed them in an ABIT BH6 motherboard.

Both machines:
Win 98SE
winchip2 200
custom heatsink mod and harddrive mount
no fans!!
128MB
6 GB harddrives
Custom addition of Websurfer IR keyboard

I sold one to a friend, so the one I have left has more mods.

Headphone output using cassette adapter in car.
Microphone input for gps voice input.
r_fl_z serial board with serial port and RJ11 connection for Rand McNally GPS and original modem still in place and functional.
Custom mount on dash for the car.
Radio Shack 12V laptop power supply.

I'm still tweaking software for the best gps/mp3 player implementation.

I have some pictures up at http://www.jjkroll.com/~jjkroll/linux/iop/
Someday I will catch the website up with all the stuff I've done.

I also have 2 websurfers. They are my faithful webserver and cable modem router. They've been up 24/7 for 4 months now with no problems.

Just finished the K6-2+ 450 mod,(using a PT6702) and added the second USB and HDD LED while I had it open.

I may be the newest member here. I've found a ton of useful info here.

Even though I had seen the initial advertising for the iOpener when it was first announced long ago, and remember telling everyone about it, I didn't buy one. Why would I? I already had a computer at home, and a great one at work. I'm an internet professional, but i've been managing computers, networks and databases for more than 15 years. I guess I look at this hack project as a way to jump back into hands-on (or hands-in) computing.

Anyway, I read an article in the paper about hacking into electronics, which mentioned the iOpener. I looked into it, and I was hooked. I bought one on eBay. I'm not sure what version it is. I need to get the hex kit from radio shack to remove the center screws so I can take a look inside. The other perimeter screws are just philips screws. The date on my box is 08/28/00, and from what I can see of the BIOS chip after taking off the memory door, I can't see any epoxy. I still have my fingers crossed, though.

If anyone knows of a "version chart" that will tell me what version I have I would appreicate the info. I've seen many posts regarding versions, but I think it would take me a while to figure out my exact version.

I plan to use the IO as a backup to my home computer, as a basic computer for my daughter (5 yrs) to learn with, and even as an MP3 player for the car. I'd also like to explore the GPS stuff also, and any other car applications.

I've bought almost everything I need, 2.5" hard drive, Windows, 2.5-3.5 adaptor kit, etc. - and plan to start soon. Unless the speed really bothers me or I get memory errors, i'm not going to waste money on more memory or a faster processor. When you have kids and college funds, you don't have money to burn.

I'm almost afraid of this working out. If it turns out like I think it will, I have at least a 5 or 6 famiily members who will be beating down my door to get me to do one for them too.

To Remove the "Secuity Trox 8" Screws, You can use a small straight blade Jeweler's Screwdriver.
One that fits beside the Pin. Works Great.

Versions, Press Tab during Boot Up, "WinChip" CPU is V3 or earlier.
If You have a "RISE" CPU, it's a V4 or Newer.

V4 has sound chip as pictured here.
V5 has sound chip above PS/2 port (white square in photo) & V4 sound chip is missing.

*SF* - thanks for the GREAT version explanation. Also, my hex screws do NOT have a pin in the middle, if that's what you mean. I think I saw someone refer to a pin in another thread, and I was suprised that mine were standard hex screws. Well, actually have four corners, not five. Are those still hex? My hex wrenches have five points.

Ragnar - thanks, I know all about Jumpin' Jack BadFlash. In fact, I once placed an order for the cable and BIOS chip which didn't go through. I've been holding off on placing it again until I actually open the IO up and make sure that I have a version that doesn't have epoxy or clipped pins, etc. - so far it looks ok, though.

Thanks again.

A four-cornered screw is known as a Robertson screw... Which makes my eyebrows raise, as, for the most part (and I emphasize the word MOST - DO NOT FLAME ME), Robertson screws are a Canadian product....
PS - When you go to the store to buy a Robertson screwdriver, you will notice that there are 3 main sizes - make sure you get the right one :}
Hope this helps.

Sorry, my mistake. They are indeed Torx security screws. I swear to you that the light reflecting inside the hole makes it impossible to see the pin. It really looked like a normal screw, until I used a flashlight.

That was the bad news, but the good news is that my BIOS chip has no epoxy! My luck usually isn't this good.

Man, now I have one family member and a neighbor that want one of these, and I haven't even started talking about it yet. Hope I don't strike out with the hack now.

I love my i-opener i think it is very 'cute'. I use it to ssh and play MP3's and surf the web all the time. The community here is great and has helped me out alot.

I also play Counter Strike. Been playing since beta 1! Not many people know what that is, or just how long ago it was. Word!

Well, the passive-i has found a permanent (for now) home down in the garage/workshop, as a machine tool controller.

It's running CNC Pro in Win98SE Dos mode. CNC Pro is a DOS G-code interpreter (a program that takes toolpaths generated by a CAD/CAM program and generates pulses to directly drive stepper motors through the parallel port) to control a Sherline benchtop milling machine to which I've added the stepper motors (using a nice kit sold by Sherline).

The only dilemma was in how to transfer the G-code files into the i-o. They typically run from 1 or 2 k up to maybe 100k. After thinking about Direct Cable Connect, USB connection, and even USB floppy drive, I settled on a Sandisk USB Flash Card reader and 32MB card, which cost a total of $50 from Best Buy (less than the cheapest USB floppy drive!) It's really neat to hot-plug the reader into my desktop and the i-o, and it has no moving parts!

I seem to be doing everything but building a model railroad layout, so the programmable throttle will need to wait for the next i-o...

All kludge, all the time.
