I just bought a V5 IO from HSN and will receive it this week. I have some
prelimary questions about what mods I need to get setup. I dont have a lot
of time to spend so I want to do the least amount. I want to just add a
harddrive and install win98 or if its easier and less time consuming, dont add the harddrive, just add win98se, with IE5 and AT&T Worldnet software to the sandisk.

Which is easier? Is there enough room on the sandisk for all this?

If I do the harddrive mod, is this the correct order? am I missing anything?

* Update Bios (just send it to badflash.com to reprogram for v5 ??)
* Install Imod 3 kit from codeman
* Stick the harddrive in a Desktop box (with the converter)
* fdisk it, format it, sys it, activate partition (copy system files )
* copy the contents of the 'win98' directory on the CD to 'win98' on the HD
* copy any drivers I need to the HD (audio, video, usb, nic, etc.)
* Connect harddrive and cables
* Install the Tennmax Lasagna Cooler
* Start the device up and run setup.exe to install win98

If I do decide to upgrade or add anything, it would probably only be the processor.
Is this the best solution??

Winchip2 ($25) drops right into the CPU slot in the Open-I motherboard without any sort of modification, and gives a 2x speed boost. Is this true?

Thanks,

Teksavy

Good luck if you want to do Win98SE in 16meg.

The minimum is a cable, bios chip, and hard drive. With a 12" cable you can "backpack" a cheap fat 19mm 2.5" drive on the back of the I-O above the bar in the back. It doesn't show from the front. You can get a 172 meg drive for around $10 if you shop around. I got 2 and put the cab files on one, made it a slave, and the other one a master and loaded Win95, then took the slave off. I ran the cable out the top. This is really the minimum hack. Stick with Win95 if you stick with the rise CPU. It runs faster and takes up less space.

If you stick with the rise266 and stock heat sink you don't need anything else but the drivers, and they are free to download.

Badflash,

How much do you sell the 12" cable for? Do I need to be
specific when ordering stating thats its for external use?

I will probably buy the bios chip from you? In stock and
ready to ship? When can I expext it to arrive from the day I purchase?

Where can I get these $10 harddrives from (172mb)?

How do I know what version my IO is?

Has netpliance just given up with the TOS agreement?

If I get a 4gb harddrive, I dont need to daisy chain two drives, right?
I can just fdisk it, format it, sys it, activate partition (copy system files)
and then run setup.exe for Win95b.

Thanks again for your help...Teksavy

Cheap hard drives are available at compgeeks. Most likely in the $30 range.

My big question is where can you get a WinChip2 for $25!? - I'll take 3 thanks!
