Anyone have a good source for a cheap standard laptop CD drive (44 pin connector)?

So far, I've found only one laptop cdrom with a standard 44 pin connector. Namely a Toshiba XM1402b, this is a 6x, and can be made to work in an I-Opener (I've done it several times in Win98, ME, and Win2k). I've bought several off E-Bay.....they go for $30-$60. Later versions (1502, 1602, 1702, etc), do NOT have a standard connector, and no-one has found an adapter that will work. The 1402b is fast enough, plays mp3s just fine, no need to look further.

I got a IBM Thinkpad 380 8x CD-ROM to work, it has 48 pin connectors but the first 4 are for ?? The drive is a TEAC CD-38 this Teac has full documentation on.

It also has 4 pins to the side for audio output.

I got it off eBay for 23.00 and it was new, not used, in a Options by IBM box.

it's very small and thin, I would dare to say it couldn't be any smaller.

I have a couple other IBM drives coming in next week, one is a new 24x drive and the some others that are 12 & 24's. I post my results from them when I get them checked out.

Anyone have any good ideas on installing the CD drive inside the IO ?? My only thought would be to fab a spacer that goes around the front and back halfs to creat a little more space inside or a mod of the base, I did see one good one that involved adding a notebook docking station to the IO base, it looked too expensive considering you have to find a docking base cheap, then gut it out. Non the less it looked good.

Regarding installation, I was thinking about hacking up (literally) the IO base and putting the CD drive in there.

Or possibly making up a box the same size as the base, put the CD drive in there, and put the base on top of it.

Maybe get a small keyboard and make a slot in the bottom of the new base for it to slide into.????

Heh. If people put informative subject lines on the start of topics, I might have seen this already...ckbone's setup looks rather slick...

FYI: NEC 4000 and 6000 series CDROM drives have 44 pin connectors. You have to remove the outer Versa-bay casing, and that removes the NEC connector and exposes a very standard looking 44 pin IDE connector. I suspect this is true for many removable "bay" type CDROM drives for notebook computers.
