| I have had a V1 since the first week of the IOpener craze. Right now its running Win98 SE and serves as a second machine to use for surfing when the GF is on the main machine. V1 is by far the easiest to modify, no goo, no bios flashing needed, just drop in a HD and go. I am using a 12.7 GB drive, Linksys USB, and I did upgrade to 128MB which has helped a lot with Win98. The only down side to V1 is that the processor upgrade path is not as easy. The only drop-in replacement is (I believe) Winchip2, which seem just about impossible to come by now. It seems that others have been able to use bigger/better processors but it requires soldering and other non-plug-n-play type hacks.
The short answer is that V1 is not worthless, unless you absolutely want to upgrade the processor. Even then it can be done, just not as easily. | |
