Modem answering machine

I am contemplating using my kitchen I-Opener as an answering machine. Also, I'd like to see if I can get the disk/screen to turn on automagically when the phone rings.

Win98 recognizes the modem as a standard one. Can anyone suggest a better driver to use ?

Has anyone successfully done this?

The I-Opener modem cannot be used as an answering machine....It's been tried with many different software programs. It just does not have the necessary hardware to do this. You can do it with an external modem...serial or USB.

Thanks, you probably saved me a lot of time. BTW: Did you ever find any other driver for the modem besides the built-in one from the Win98 distribution?

Search the board for Actiontec, the brand of your modem. The driver you will see works fine in Windoze 98 and Windoze WhyMe.

A point of note: ActionTec's web site has a firmware download that would appear to add voice support to the I-Opener's modem.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FLASH YOUR MODEM! It will render your modem inoperable.

Here's a link to the driver: http://www.actiontecsupport.com/files/cwmdm170.exe When asked to specify, your modem is called external 56k call-waiting.

Hi,
i was wondering if any of you that have had win98 detect wave device for voice modem, have any problem since it first said it found the wave device, my problem is that when i would log onto the internet the modem would make the regular dialing noises and all was god until i had been on the internet for about a minute, then it would start making a loud high pitch tone and it would keep getting higher pitched until it stopped and then the modem would quit working, also after that win98 wouldnt detect a modem on the system unless i unplugged the power and totally restarted the system, i uninstalled all the drivers and stuff and removed the modem by software and hardware and when i put it all back together and used standard modom driver it seems to work ok again

Thanks for the advise. After reading the above mentioned thread, I think you'd have to get your head examined before trying to flash the modem.
