Has anyone tried to use two 9.6 rechargable - the type used for RC cars? i know about th e12 volt gel cell thing, but way too big & bulky. I just want a couple of hours at a time to surf & check email. Seems no one is really interested. Any takers in trying again... I am game, just would like some input.

thanks

It ought to work, I think that you just have to try it. I'd bet that with a hard disk, this draws about 1.5 amps (I am able to bring up an IO with an 18V 1amp supply, and a hard disk draws about .5amp or less at ?? 12V???)
SWAG: If you were to get 16 2200mAH NiMH batteries, you could probably run the IO for about 1.2 hours. 3800mAH NiMH... about 2.2 hours.

2200maH batteres are about $5 each and 3800mAH are about $10 each. Thats an $80-$160 investment in batteries!

The thing to do is to hook up a DMM and find how much current the IOpener with <whatever peripheral> draws at 19v. Do the math and find out how much battery you need and how long it will last with your peripherals.

I'm not sure what the power rating is; but, Amazon has a good price for 6.0V RC car battery packs. Three in series would get you 18V.

Actually, thats not too bad. Three in series and you might get 30 minutes. two sets in parallel of (three in series) and you might get hour... for about $20. Of course, you still have to find a way to charge them....
