I have 2 v5 iopeners and have a problem running windows 98 first edition. The machine randomly bluescreens, sometimes at boot, sometimes after several hours, usually with the error "fatal exception 0e at 0167:bff9dba7" after this I get more errors and the system becomes inoperable. It does not bluescreen in safe mode. I have installed windows 98 3 times now, twice standard install and once 98lite. I have tried 2 cyberblade drivers including the one hosted on this website. I have tried removing all network devices (including an smc usb nic), and all other drivers except for the current stable via drivers and the cyberblade drivers. Both machines have this problem, both are running the v5 patched bios from badflash and a toshiba 4 gig 12.5 mm hard drive. Linux runs flawlessly.

When i tried to install the 4 in 1 drivers i got an error "registry error please reboot" whenever i tried to install so i installed the individual drivers.

I have searched the threads and haven't found anything like this. I'm stumped, anyone have an idea?

Thanks,

Brian

Assuming you replaced the BIOS chip.....a poor connection can give these sorts of symptoms. Try cleaning the contacts...slightly bend out the contacts(be careful). Try different heights, don't just push it all the way in. Poor connections have caused numerous strange problems, especially with versions that had epoxy...but also with other versions. Bad conections at the ram chip are also a possibility...even on units that never had the stock chip removed. Be sure to install the latest VIA 4-in-one driver (4.26a)...It should install without problems. One more thing....a badly seated heatsink or fan can cause over-heating, leading to rebooting and other problems.

I am running two V5 IOpeners with updated CPU/memory/disk, badflash BIOS , no problems and no hangs on Win98 first edition. My installation was partition-magic cloned from a system disk that was used in a BX system->i815e->iopener. It was updated with the VIA 4 in 1 drivers, cyberblad drivers, audio drivers, etc. It is attached to network via a Linksys USB10BT connector. It is very stable (will run for days with no crashes).
