CD drives that have worked with i-opener ???
Trying to list all models with IDE 44-pin male header or which can be easily adapted

I'm hoping to list all the CD products KNOWN to be suitable for i-o for the benefit of us bargain-bin browsers and auction hawks. Unfortunately, no matter how I narrow my search focus, I come up with over a thousand threads. I AM slowly going through thousands of messages, and will post on this thread the best of what I find. But if anyone can speed the process by providing model numbers of suitable drives, a grateful nation is ... well ... grateful.

Specifically, I'd like models which already terminate at a standard 44-pin laptop IDE male header, or models which can be adapted without tight-quarters soldering. Also sources for parts such as 2-mm header blocks and 2-mm jumpers.

Everyone does things a little differently here...
My electronics hobby includes a lot of new and used parts found Dumpster divin' locally....
The 2mm jumpers can be had at you local OEM supply. I get tons of these still in little sealed plastic bags {8 or 10 to a bag}. Typically these were meant for (SCSI?) OEM harddrives. These jumpers fit on the OEM harddrive motherboard itself not on the end common to the data and power connector as typically seen on IDE harddrives.

Also I find older laptops that have kool parts in them tossed out by some corporations....Interesting Data there was on some of these machines...
I found about a dozen sets of partially completed VR Glasses that have the 2mm headers 8x2mm and 10x2mm.

Older 2.5" harddrives yields headers if you are handy with a HEAT GUN.

I've spent many years doing this and have acquired a huge inventory of misc parts. Gets real addicting
Perhaps there are some electronic assembly/mfg facilities in your area?

I'm reading you're looking for laptop cdroms. Look no further....Toshiba XM1402b. It has a std connector...like a hard-drive, with 6 extra pins for audio out. A std 44 pin connector fits right on. It's 6x, works fine on an I-Opener, with no power problems using Winchip2, RISE, or pentium200 cpus. As far as an AMD goes, someone else might know. They're found commonly on E-Bay for $20-$60 or so. I paid $22 for my last one (new). As to getting one to fit inside the I-Opener case....the measurements I did, indicate it won't fit without cutting a big hole in the back. mine mount in a base. Here's some photos: http://photos.yahoo.com/ckbone63123

It's a docking station for a HiNote laptop. It's called HiNote Mobile Media...there's a picture of the box in those photos. I got it off E-Bay....actually I got two $22 and $35. They appear frequently on E-Bay....They usually go for $30 to $75. They come with the toshiba cdrom and a sound system which I removed to install the hard drive. I'm using the speakers you see in front...disconnected the stock ones in the I-Opener. I added a Badflash custom cable, which supplies the power to drive the cdrom and the hard-drive. A 17mm thick drive will fit...you can see it in the photos. A fairly easy hack....you only have to cut one hole on the outer case for the IDE cable. It's almost a perfect match to the stock base...even the color is the same. It's been working fine for 6 months or so. Do a search on E-Bay in the laptop sections for HiNote mobile media.

Since we are looking at the cool $h1t ckbone has on his setup. How about the monitor extension arm? Where did you find it? And is it made by Fellows or Fellowes?

I'm not sure about the spelling...Fellowes? I got it at CompUSA awhile ago. It's very sturdy...made to hold a full-size monitor, so it holds the I-Opener no sweat. It swings side-to-side as well as retracting. And the cables run through the arm...pretty neat set-up. (If you sleep with someone...I don't think this would be a good install....)

ckbone: I love this hinote ultra unit. Before I buy, tell me more:

You removed the minisubwoofer and the audio circuitry to accommodate your HD. Is there anything else interesting in the original equipment? And did you tuck anything else interesting in there with your mods?
I'm thinking I'd try to save the full audio (by stashing my HD in the hollow i-o base). Did you hear the full audio works in use before you eviscerated it? Any good?

I'm thinking of attaching the dock to the i-o base with four screws directly into the i-o base's feet. Will that fly?

Here's a link to the original topic on this base/cdrom install: http://www.linux-hacker.net/cgi-bin/UltraBoard/UltraBoard.pl?Action=ShowPost&Board=technical&Post=1509&Idle=10&Sort=0&Order=Descend&Page=0&Session= I never heard the audio board working....It has a pcmcia interface of some sort. I'm using the two small speakers you see in the pictures...they sound very good, about 2x as big as stock. My I-Opener base attaches with velcro....you could use screws if you wanted....I think everything you need to know about it is covered in the above link.... If you have any other questions, just ask.
