Dual RS-232 Daughterboard with Audio, Fan, and Cables now available

The Offer:

The Dual RS-232 Serial Board with Audio (non-v5 at this time) and Fan support is now available, in the following forms:
1. Bare Board model.
A two-sided, solder masked board with plated through holes, including parts list with sources. Price: $20 + S/H (cables available seperately from Jack@BadFlash.com for only $10)

2. Hacker-Special model.
Includes the board described above, professionally wave soldered with all components EXCEPT the MAX235CPG chips. It is assumed that the buyer will take advantage of the FREE samples available from Maxim to obtain the MAX235 chips, http://dbserv.maxim-ic.com/sl_requests2.cfm Onboard sockets allow the user to simply plug-and-play with their chips. This board comes complete with the 6 cables required to fully utilize all features of the board (both serials, and the audio), along with 4 adjusted grip length fasteners with spacers to allow the board to be stacked with the modem.
Price: $45 + S/H

3. Pay-and-Play model.
This version includes all features of the Hacker-Special model described above, INCLUDING the MAX235CPG chips. This is offered for individuals who have more money than time, and would prefer to simply order the completed ready-to-run board.
Price: $68 + S/H (The retail price of two MAX235CPG chips is $32, so this is still a bargin)

The boards may be preordered now from Jack@BadFlash.com with deliveries beginning in approximately 12 business days.

Cudos go to Jack for supporting the board offering, for testing the prototype, and for working very hard to produce a 6 cable package for a VERY reasonable price of only $10. His efforts have contributed significantly to allowing the price of the board to remain low.

The board uses a unique staggered stacking arrangement, allowing it to be stacked safely on top of the existing modem board, with no R/F shield trimming required.
For dual serial operation, the modem must be removed to free COM1.
For single serial operation, the modem may remain in place and in use.
For single serial operation, only one MAX235CPG chip is required.
The audio is functional for all installations.
Power connections are provided to support the fan.
Header pads are provided for user-installed header posts to allow the use of TTL level lines from COM2, as well as the RING, RST, MIC, SPKR, GND and +5 lines not used from COM1.

Please refer technical questions to r_fl_z@hotmail.com
and order questions to Jack@BadFlash.com

We have tried to keep the prices low to cover our costs and to have a little fun, however these prices may be adjusted up :( or down :) depending on interest, inflation, and the performance of Jacks international investments ;)

Two questions:

This will not work for people with a V5 right?

and second, could you dumb down what is it this board does?

thanks Hay

Codeman, I appologize for this. I think r_fl_z got carried away with how proud he was of the work and forgot the BBS rules. Feel free to take down this post and I'll put up a more discrete message. There is a good bit on interest here though. We should have arranged with you in advance before posting.

What will the fan voltage be?

I'm almost positive the fan voltage from this board is 5V. Although it is not terribly difficult to get 12v output.

Look at http://sproggy.mp3car.com

Output of the fan connection is 5V. We are using the com port, so we didn't want to remove the capability to use a 5V fan easily. If you have the IMOD3 this is no big deal as Codeman's board has a 5V connection too.

We have not tested the board on a V5. We are 100% sure it will work for the RS-232, but have not doped out the connections for the sound yet. I'm sure it will work, and with a little help from the board here, we'll have the information in no time. I killed both my V5's on the K6-III+ 450 project and have had no time to trouble shoot.

As far as what the board does, it is real simple. It adds 2 RS-232 ports, or just one as desired by mounting it slightly different. The one port mounting preserves the modem, the two port mounting requires the modem to be removed.

It also adds an isolation amplifier for sound so that a standard external powered set of speakers can be used.

Any chance this thing can get one or two more fan outputs? At 450MHz I'm cooling more than just the AMD chip, I also have a little blower fan installed at the memory door and I'd like to just "plug-n-play" (excuse the MS terminology

If not, I can probably add my own, I just need to know the molex part number for the plug...

...contacting Jack about ordering a kit now.

hay9000 asks, could you dumb down what is it this board does?

The I-Opener's Comm Ports are TTL (0 & 5 Volts) on a 2mm header
The RS232 Standard is "+ & -" 12volts. The Max Chip makes this conversion.
Also You get The Standard DB9 Connector.

PrimerAL:
We dealt with your issue via email but, in case anyone else is interested, the fan connector will source enough current to run multiple fans. It will be up to the user to build up a splitter to connect to the on-board 2mm fan header and then connect to the other fans. One could mod the board, but pcb real estate is a bit limited.

Hay9000:
Starfish has answered your question with the jist of what the board accomplishes, along with providing the so-called TL082 audio hack and seperate fan power support (since most power their fan from the CN12 com2 header row, which is occupied and unavailable when the com2 serial port is in operation).
Feel free to email me if you have additional questions.

Here is a second source for the *235CPG chips which may be used in place of the MAX235CPG chip from Maxim. http://www.sipex.com/products/samples.cfm for the Sipex SP235CPG free samples.

Several have asked how much it costs to complete the audio mod, and the answer is: nothing. Instead of only providing the pads for the components, to be added by the user (as originally planned), both models of the completed board include all of the audio mod components already installed. The TL082 is socketed.

To clarify the v5 audio issue with the board:
The board is fully functional with all versions of the iO, except for the audio in iOs with the v5 motherboard. The audio has been tested with the Yamaha sound chip only at this time. We'll test it with a v5 motherboard very soon. The audio works with version 1-4 iOs regardless of the BIOS chip installed...including the v5 BIOS.

Another of my silly questions....

What is the difference between using the daughtercard and using a usb to serial adapters?
Wouldn't the USB adapter be cheaper?

Cheaper? Sure... I bought one of the Siig usb-serial adapters from Egghead when they had them for $9. But performance-wise, using the onboard serial instead of a USB alternative is probably less CPU-intensive.

Looking at the descriptions of the three different boards for sale I need minor clarification. The cable pack being sold for $10, is that included with any of the different types of boards being offered? I may have misunderstood, but it sounded like the wise-guy model included the cable pack while the other two didn't. Also ae the boards up for sale yet? Or just pre-order?

Sweet, I'm anxiously awaiting the two boards I ordered. Keep me informed so I can plan on bringing my soldering iron to work.

I'm glad I waited a while before jumping on a particular audio mod and CPU mod.

I was able to make a couple of minor changes to the board before it went into production, one of which was to add another set of headers for +5 and GND. A couple of users requrested support for additional fans, and I needed power for the touchscreen installation, so I threw it in. The board now supports 4 +5/GND sets with both serials in operation, or 3 sets with only COM2 in use.

Texman:

Those are, in fact, my ssooo sexy fingers. If you meant 'bareboard' in the post above, instead of 'breadboard', then yes, it's the same board. Each of the 3 versions uses the same PCB...the one pictured.
