Crash & Burn Iopeners
Are all modified IOpeners as unstable as the 2 I have??

I have 2 mod Iopeners that I did myself. Added a 6 gig HD to each, a Tennmax fan to the factory CPU, and flashed the BIOS via BadFlash. I then installed Win98 fresh on the first one and installed all the appropriate drivers so everything including sound is working great.

But if I leave it on overnight (or extended period of time) I get the Win98 'Fatal Exception' error. It is amazingly slow and extremely unreliable. I copied the first hard drive to a Ghost image and then to the other hard drive. And I have the same problem on the second one. So I connected a parallel port CD-Rom drive to it and tried installing Win2000 Professional. It didnt even make it through the installation process before crashing. So I tried again and it crashed again in a differnt spot.

Finally after a thrid time, Win2k installed but it crashes after the desktop comes up.

I do have another one running Win98 & some mapping software at a friend's pizza restaurant and he has not reported any problems or crashing----I built it identical to the two with problems. I have another one in the box and until I figure this out that's where its gonna stay.

Any help is appreciated.
Jeff

Hey jeff, it sounds to me either you have a heat problem, or a power management problem. Turn off all power managemtn in the BIOS and keep a record of how long it takes for your issues to arrise. Also, check the temp of your IO by placing your hand just above the modem.

You cannot install Win2000 from a parallel port cdrom. What happens is when W2k reboots partially through the install, it no longer recognizes the parallel port cdrom..... then the whole install fails. Copy W2k to the hard drive first....install it from there. Its much more stable than W98 for most people.

I would reformat the harddrive, run scandisk over it, and reinstall 98...It sounds like you are getting some conflicts...drivers or whatever.

Put the 98 cabs on a HD that will boot to the C: prompt, and install clean.
