Gang,
I tried to log on to Memory To Go today and was unsuccessful. Does anyone know if it is just that their site is down or have they gone out of business? I want to upgrade my second Iopener's memory. On this note, has anyone tried a 256 mb sticks, yet, and with what result?
Also, are there any other places that sell memory at a discount? One month ago I paid $50 for 128 megs at memorytogo. It was a upgrade for an I-book.

Thanks

I tried to order the memorytogo cap161 128MB SODIMM but it seems as though it now comes in 4x256 instead of 8x128. Some people here reported it only showed up as 64MB in their IO. They had an alternate part for $58, but I decided to shop around. Most places I found are getting $60-65, but I ran across this deal at Dell, and it looks right to me. 144 pin SODIMM, PC100, CL2, non ecc, $48.95. If anyone orders it post back and let us know if it works.

Maybe you should look at the picture on this URL.

Not even close.

Yeah..the picture shows 168 pin module but I bet it's just a page error (Wrong picture). I've seen some other company's do the same thing before.

That's a real good deal for 128mb 144pin SODIMM module. The best I've seen so far!
To bad I've got all I need....

I just ordered memory from Memorytogo.com but I called the toll free number and spoke to a "Technician" not the lady that answers the phone. He said the CAP 161 128 meg SODIMM on the website was a 4 chip memory that would show up as 64 meg in an I Opener, not an 8 chip as Automator mentioned in an earlier thread. The 8 chip memory was $57 plus shipping. I specifically asked for memory for an I-Opener.

Looks like the Dell memory is already gone in any case.

Just got the 128mb ibook memory I ordered from them (memorytogo, on the 11th for $43)
today, and it has 4 chips on each side. This would be the good stuff, right? I haven't tried it yet.

mdetz, can you tell us that your memorytogo cap161-128mb dimm worked out ok? Why are they telling folks who call them it is a 4 chip stick when it is really the same 8 chip stick it always was? I backed out of ordering one a couple of weeks ago after being told by them it was 4 chips. Maybe the guy didn't turn it over to see the other 4 chips?

I wish I could. I'm new to all this, and don't have my iopener running. I've just been stockpiling parts, waiting on my bios chip to arrive. I think it may have arrived today, so I'll report back asap.

Mdetz,
You don't need the new bios chip to see if the memory works. Just go through the ram door and exchange the module. It's ridiculously easy. When installed, power up, hit tab and watch the bios detect the new memory chip.

mdetz and all others wondering about 128 MB SODIMM from memorytogo.com:
There are two 128 MB SODIMMs that memorytogo.com sells. One with 128 Mbit DRAMs and the other with 256 Mbit DRAMs. The one with 128 Mbits is the one to use with the IOpener, as it's BIOS doesn't recognize SODIMMS with the 256 Mbit DRAMs.
The part number CAP161-128MB that memorytogo.com sells for $40 on their website is *not* the one for the IOpener. If/when you call to place an order, you need to speak with somebody in tech support about this to make sure they send you the one with 128 Mbit DRAMs. This is a SODIMM that has 4 DRAMs on each side for a total of 8. This part also costs more--I had to pay 57+6 for mine, clearly more than the $40 for the part advertised on their website.

I received mine in the mail today and it works like a charm.

Note to the cautious, when removing the old 32 MB SODIMM from the IOpener, don't just yank the chip up--kinda like you might do when removing regular PC66/PC100/PC133 RAM from a full-sized computer. The little white retainer clips are on a spring and must be pushed away from eachother, and then the 32 MB SODIMM will pop right up. Removing the old SODIMM from the IOpener requires no force--you if you're yanking it up and it doesn't want to come up, you might break the retaining mechanism. Push those little white retainer clips holding it in place apart from eachother and you're in.

Kevin

Sorry guys, I'm having trouble with the bios goo. Kevin - I ordered cap161-128, and got the 4-chip-per-side memory. Maybe I just got lucky?

Ok,
Can someone fill me in, whats wrong with 4x256 vs 8x128? Is there a definable problem with I-Openers with respect to larger memory chip sizes?

While at it I have seen powerbook G3 SODIMM which looks similar, but it comes in high profile... does anyone know what the size profile of high profile G3 memory is vs low profile?

Thanks

I received a 128MB SODIMM from MemoryToGo.com a couple of weeks ago. The memory has been working great at both 66MHz and 100 MHz FSB. Part # CAP161-128MB. When I filled out the online order form I specifically stated that I wanted the 8 chip variety in the comments section. That is what I received. Best of all 128MB SODIMM is only $40.

justme: the chipset in the IO does not recognize 256Mbit or larger memory. The documentation that shows this 501.pdf is available on fr ee dr iv e. co m

Hi Programmer,
I looked for "memory" in the pdf, and didn't find a 256MB limit specifically, could you point me toward a page... it is a 153 page document... (or a page range, chapter that sorta thing). It was helpful to have something to look into... sigh...

Page 46. it doesn't SAY that 256Mbit chips won't work.. it doesn't mention them at all. It also won't recognize them as 256Mbit chips. It recognizes them as 128Mbit chips.

If you'd like to test this, purchase a 128MB sodimm that has only 4 chips on it, put it in the IO and watch it detect 64MB. Then (in Real Mode DOS) run a program that reconfigures PCI bus 0 device 0 offsets 58 - 5F with values that you believe will configure the memory controller properly, write to memory addresses in that region, read it back and verify it.

If you perform this test and are successful, let us all know, and we'll find some way to get the better configuration into the bios.
