Gang, I just checked out prices at http://www.memorytogo.com. They just dropped the price of the ibook 128 mb memory stick to $40 + shipping. Easy change out for the I-opener.

They also have the Powerbook Titanium SODIMM (256MB) for $119.

to use a 256MB sodimm in the IO it must have 16 chips. The chipset in the IO will not properly recognize 256Mbit chips.

I stopped paying close attention when the supply of i-openers dried up.
The prospect of new $99 i-os has my brain in a panic, so can I get a recap?
One authoritative post here could save dozens of niggling queries later.

i-o ships with a single 144-pin 32Mb PC100 SoDIMM, right?
That single slot can be upgraded with a standard 64Mb PC100 SoDIMM as suitable for iBook, right?
And many 128Mb PC100 SoDIMMs are also suitable for use here. What's the spec that divides good from bad?
Now was the previous post *ONLY* saying that the particular 256 mentioned was *NOT* suitable?
Or am I learning that there is *SOME* 256Mb stick that will work? If so, what's the spec on that?

Meanwhile, what's the true max on the Virgin WebPlayer? 64Mb? 128Mb?

And is there any use/trade-in/resale market for the liberated 32Mb original SoDIMMs?
Do they make a stacker device to let you combine two 32s into one 64?

This post from Lakewood seems to suggest that the iBook 128Mb stick is NG in i-opener.

"I just ordered memory from Memorytogo.com but I called the toll free number and spoke to a "Technician" not the lady that answers the phone. He said the CAP 161 128 meg SODIMM on the website was a 4 chip memory that would show up as 64 meg in an I Opener, not an 8 chip as Automator mentioned in an earlier thread. The 8 chip memory was $57 plus shipping. I specifically asked for memory for an I-Opener. 02-13-2001 04:49:27 A.M. "

Ragnar: Do you have different info on CAP161 or a different part number for $40?

The chipset in the IO recognizes 128Mbit chips and will not recognize larger.
you need 8 bits for a byte

32MB ram for IO must have 2 chips (or more)
64MB ram for IO must have 4 chips (or more)
128MB ram for IO must have 8 chips (or more)
256MB ram for IO must have 16 chips (or more) (samsung makes one)
512MB ram for IO must have 32 chips (or more) (probably not enough real estate on a regular sodimm for this)

I got this chip (CAP161-128MB) from memorytogo, when it was $43.
So far it seems to work fine in my iopener.

NormConquest,
Part cap161-128 is what I am using in my v4 right now. I paid $50 on Jan. 5th for it. The bios recognized it the first time I plugged it in. A friend is using cap161-64 in his v1. If the price for a 256 mb stick drops anymore, I may order one just to try it out. If it doesn't work, I can always sell it on eBay.

It may be interesting to see if a pc133 memory would help us go faster. The pc100 stuff works fine but if you want to exceeed the 100MHz FSB then pc133 migh allow for some extra bandwidth.

Kinda expanding on what Programmer said, here's a page on Kingston's site about chip densities and the like, if you're not in the know on that stuff (I wasn't): http://www.kingston.com/tools/umg/newumg04.asp

Also, I just ordered a 128MB Kingston ValueRam SODIMM from Dell for $54 shipped (the same one mentioned in the other memory thread referenced in this thread.) I got free shipping, and according to http://www.valueram.com/datasheets/kvr100x64sc2_128.pdf , this is what we need, since it's got eight 128mbit chips.

I just received the Kingston memory I ordered from Dell as mentioned in the previous post. DOESN'T work ... erratic w/lock-up. I have used other brands of 128 in my IoP's (PNY, Micron) w/success. Must be a bad SODIMM or a bad batch? Be careful! It is recognized at boot with the proper amount ... but flakes out after W98 loads.

Well not exactly cheap memory...

Circuit City have 128Meg SODIMM for a decent price this week at $79 with $20 rebate.
Works fine in my I-Opener, there are 8 chips on the module.

I missed out on the Memory-to-go SODIMMs when they were selling for around $50
and works in the I-Opener.

This is my first 128Meg upgrade of the 3 I-Openers I have, I figure a little extra
money for the convience is ok. Now I have to find 2 more SODIMMs for better price.
Anyone have any confirmed sources for good memory ?

Thanks,
CheeseWiz

Ummm.... Well, there's the $40 128MB item from MemoryToGo above -- price and availability confirmed as of 11pm Tuesday Feb 20, and quality verified by three hackers' endorsement...

Scrolling. Not just for breakfast anymore.
