I-Openers and Cars
Is the screen bright enough?

I just got back from a trip where I used the Rand McNally GPS device on my Thinkpad. The thing was sitting on the passenger seat facing me. In bright sun-light, the display is hard to see....even though it's a TFT screen and very bright. Here's my question: Does the I-Opener have a bright enough screen to be useful (in the daytime) in an auto? I spent the whole trip thinking about this. I also thought out a neat, removable mount that would mount the I-Opener on the dash, pass side, with a swing out bracket, allowing an easy view of the screen. The whole project would be a big waste of time for me, if I couldn't see the screen in sunlight. Anyone have any ideas about this? Anyone have any photos of a good-looking car install?

FWIW..I saw today, a Nissan Pathfinder with a factory GPS...pretty neat. It has a 4" screen, aprox. Fairly easy to see in sunlight. Only bad thing...$2000.

In My Old "87" Nissan Pulsar, I Removed the Glove Box.( I didn't really use it anyhow ! )
There are some trim screws @ the Top Edge of the opening. I removed one screw @ each end.
Using "Punched Angle Iron" (holes every inch)
I cut a Lenght that fit & 2 long Screws with washers.
I just clamped the 2 uprights for the I-Opener where they kickback.
You can Remove the Base or just fold it up.
This was the Perfect Height, just below the Hoodline of the Driver's View.
Driving into the Sun I can use it during the Day, but Not with the Sun @ My Back.
Make Sure The Passenger wears their SeatBelt,
Don't want anyone Eating LCD Glass!

In a Honda CRV it fits GREAT on the Floor between the seats as far forward as possible.
Rides Good there with No Mounting & Sunlight isn't a Problem.
I would @ least sit a SandBag on the Base If kept it on the Floor.
I don't like looking that Far from the Road While I am Driving, I mean Riding in a Car
I have left an I-Opener Outside in a Car for More than 6 months, No Problems so Far !

When I Installed My I-Opener in My "87" Pulsar,
I was Happy to Find the Cassette Deck was Plugged in with an Old Style Keyboard Plug ( Din 5 )
I Never mentioned it as I thought it might be something they did just that year.
Well, I am Upgrading to a "92" Nissan & was planning on using My Old Radio as the Harrness is the Same.
But the New Radio has the same Input Jack It is Not Labeled on the Radio.

Holding a Male Keyboard Plug Facing You, with the Key @ the Top, Pins on the Bottom.
The Pin on the Right is #1 Signal Earth ( Right & Left Channel Common )
Pin #2 Right Channel
Pin #3 Internal Source (Radio)
Pin #4 Left Channel
Pin #5 External Source (I-Opener)
Shell is #6 Ground

12VDC to Pin #3 or Pin #5 determine the Source. No Power to either, & You can hear Both.

Oh, I almost forgot, these are "Clarion" Radios & The Sound is GREAT !!! MP3s RULE !!!

For the original post:

I recently went on a 10-day road trip from NJ to Colorado (4500 miles round trip, we also went to Cleveland). I did the GPS hack (com ports, and a Rand McNally GPS + installed all the US street maps onto a large notebook hard-drive) and it worked great. I have a 2001 Nissan XTerra and I was able to make a mount that placed the Iopener in front of the radio Head Unit, which was ok, because radio controls are on the steering wheel also.

At night it was great, if a little too bright, but we never got lost. During the day, glare made the screen almost unusable. However, I did have a piece of plexi in front of the screen, so this probably added to the problem, without the plexi, it might not have been as bad. The only solution I could think of was getting a glare-reducing monitor cover and using that as a screen protector instead of the plexi. but I haven't tried that yet.
