Having some HD probs. Hope it's quick and painless so I can go back to just reading this forum, and not posting more threads..
Its an IBM Travelstar 4.2G set as Primary MAster, formatted as 1 FAT32 Partition, LBA..
Went and formatted the MBR, also removed the cmos battery. Plugged HD into IO and booted. In BIOS, when I got to Auto detect HDD.. The screen has in the middle:
CYLS HEADS PRECOMP LANDZONE
Drive C: ( MB)

I hit enter and see it's looking for Drive C: It returns 3 "choices" in the bottom of the page. Only one drive doesn't have a Precomp of 65536 and the other specs match my IBM 4.2G Travelstar. It comes up as the first choice and is listed:
SIZE CYLS HEADS PRECOMP LANDZONE SECTORS MODE
2(Y) 4326 526 255 0 8943 63 LBA
1 4327 8944 15 65535 8943 63 Normal
3 4327 559 240 65536 8943 63 Large

I find it odd it doesn't place the info up top until I manually choose that number (between 1 and 3) that matches the HD. In the basic CMOS setup it Auto detects the HD fine and lists it as LBA.

For drive D, do I skip it? It lists the follwing

SIZE CYLS HEADS PRECOMP LANDZONE SECTORS MODE
2(Y) 15 15 32 0 489 63 LBA
1 16 490 2 65536 489 32 Normal

I chose the #2 as I was told never to choose a drive with Precomp of 65536.

*NOTE* As an experiment, I disconnected all my HD's in my server and tried to boot off the IBM HD.. No prob.. comes right up to C: prompt.

I am using a V5 BIOS from Badflash (bought the entire chip).
Could this be the prob? I'm pretty sure I have a V5 IO (has 266 Rise, and got it from HSN just 3 weeks ago), so I'm pretty much stumped at this point. Any suggestions for me? Thanks guys.
Josh
PS I promise this is the last post I make for at least a week.. heheh

I doubt your Travelstar requires the BIOS Write Precompensation (PreComp) feature. Setting PRECOMP to 2^16 or 65536 will disable this feature.

If the drive works in your desktop PC, why not simply copy the configuration details from the PC and manually input them into your IO's bios?

I was under the impression that you didn't want to pick the drive with 65536 as the Precomp. I've been choosing all options EXCEPT the choices with that. I'll give it a try.
Thanks,
Josh

This whole thread is strange to me.

After I put the new bios chip in, I just used auto on the drives.

I don't go to the autodetect screen, I just have the drives set up for auto.

If I don't have a bootable HD then it won't boot, but as long as the drive has a primary boot partition it should work just fine.
