BIOS Hangs on PNP Extension
BIOS Hang

New MessageBIOS Hangs on PNP Extension (modified 0 times) ndborko

Hello,

I installed an I-MOD 2 kit in a V4 IO with a BadFlash BIOS, and when I rebooted and switched to the BIOS POST screen, I see that the BIOS properly detected the CPU and memory, but it displays the PNP extension copyright and hangs... caps-lock does not light the LED. Same deal with the old BIOS when I tried to put it back in. All the pins on the BIOS are making good connection. I disconnected the HD and modem to try to eliminate PNP devices, no dice.

Any suggestions?

You don't Mention CPU Cooling ???
Does this Hard Drive boot in another System ?
VIA Recomends "Restore BIOS Defaults" when First Powering up a System Build.
Good Luck ! * StarFish *

Cooling: Lasagna CPU fan, works fine.
Hard drive: installed linux from another system
BIOS: can't get into the BIOS setup to reset it

I think I'm going to need more than luck at this point, but thanks for the encouragement.

As a last resort...

With the IO powered off and unplugged, take out the little watch battery and let the IO sit for a minute or two.. that'll forcefully clear out your CMOS settings.

> BIOS: can't get into the BIOS setup to reset it

I would Guess this is Your Whole Problem ! We Need to Understand Why This Is !
Try another KeyBoard &/or Splitter
<CTRL><ATL><ESC>(Not DEL) to Enter BIOS During BootUp (for Neophytes Reading This)

Use a Splitter that has Ends Labeled "KeyBoard" & "Mouse"
Plug into Wrong Ends to switch the Signals.

Like The IDE Hard Drive Connector,
The Mouse Clock & Data Signals are Reversed with those of the KeyBoard @ the PS/2 Connector.

A Splitter without the Ends Labeled is A Straight thur "Y" Cable.
& wouldn't Work any better than just trying to plug the device straight into the I-Opener PS/2 Port.

Re: Clearing CMOS, tried it, no effect.
Re: Using splitter, the keyboard works because I can hit tab to get to the BIOS POST screen, but it locks up right after that and I can't get into the BIOS setup (yes, always using CTL-ALT-ESC).

A friend suggested leaving the battery out overnight in case the CMOS is stubborn, but I'm not optimistic that'll really help. Anyone have any experience with Award BIOS problems in general? Anyone know how you can hook up a speaker so I can hear diagnostic beeps from the BIOS (to help track down the problem)?

How long have you left it at the PNP screen? Sometime the BIOS is looking for something that it cannot find. Sometimes the wrong harddrive setting can cause this. Let the computer 'hang' for a few minutes (15) and see if you get an error message.

I've left the unit on for a "long time" (>15 minutes), but still no dice. I'm very disappointed that I've now got a $100 hunk of junk :(

Here's a follow-up in case anyone is interested in the outcome-

I took apart the whole damn thing, reinstalled all the components that were removable, cleaning all the contacts, scrubbing the BIOS socket, and, as one person suggested, I didn't seat the BIOS all the way in the socket. It now works!

Thanks for all your suggestions and encouragement.
