Ease of setting up an i-opener?

I am extremely interested in purchasing one of the $125 i-openers to use as an FTP server, but I am a little confused over all the talk of multiple versions and the various options that can be installed into the unit. If I purchase the $125 i-opener, imod3 kit, cooling fan, and a notebook hard drive, can I quickly and easily assemble them into a fully working system capable running Linux, or is there much more involved? Thanks!

If you get anything other than a V1, then it will be a little tricky, but not impossible.
Basically you have to set up a hard drive so that it appears to be the sandisk to the BIOS, and contains an image of the V1 software + a bios flasher program + V1 BIOS. Then, guess what, you flash the BIOS back to V1 so now the IOPENER acts like a V1.

Now that you either a)bought a V1 or b)have an iopener whose BIOS has been flashed to V1, you can hook up any hard drive to it and boot off of it.

There is a little more to it than this, basically, getting into BIOS to change drive booting settings, but I can't remember this off hand

Go do some reSEARCH on the threads.

All the versions can be hacked and converted into units running Linux from a hard drive. To keep things simple, try to pick up a unit without clipped pins (some late V2 and early V3 units) or goo on the BIOS (V3 and V4 units).

It's possible to get around these annoyances, but it will be easier to avoid having deal with it.
