There wasn't much of an interest, so nothing has happened yet. Perhaps I should give a firmer time, date and agenda.
I'm going to check with my company and see if it's possible to use a conference room Saturday April 7th around 3pm or so. That way people could plug in their IOpeners, should they choose to bring them. So check back for updates.
Also, this meeting isn't just for "experienced" IOpener hackers. Actually, I was hoping that there may be far more lurkers who frequent this board that might show up. That way they could take a look at a real IOpener (since I would be bringing mine) and decide if 1)they're interested in getting one and 2)if they feel up to hacking it themselves. If they don't then they might be able to network with more experienced hackers willing to share their knowledge and time.
If I am able to get the conference room, I could give a small "tutorial" on the IOpener, covering basic things like:
Getting past the Torx security screws
Reflashing the BIOS/adding one from Badflash
Connecting a 2.5" 12.5mm (or smaller) laptop HD with the "flipped" cable
to more advanced things like:
Turning the 16 MB Sandisk into a bootable drive (optionally with Win98Lite)
Networking the IOpener through:
the parallel port (e.g. a Direct Cable Connection on Windows)
a USB->Ethernet adapter
a wireless USB->Ethernet adapter (I use an Intel Wireless USB Anypoint adapter because I haven't been able to find an 802.11b wireless USB adapter)
Modding the stock 266 MHz Rise CPU to:
a 200 MHz Pentium (because it has 16 KB L2 cache RAM and the Rise has none!)
a 450 MHz AMD K6-3+ 450 MHz (because this is the best CPU upgrade)
Adding r_fl_z's serial mod to enable the second COM port
Adding the second USB port mod
And, I may be able to demo a touchscreen modded IOpener (but that's not a commitment!)
