My situation is this, I just bought a used I-Opener that was previously is service with Netpliance, up to the end of March of this year, It is a V4 with the Torx Security screws and the Rise 266 CPU. The BIOS is dated 6/23/00. I have tried many times to use the Tab-4444 method of accessing QNX to reflash the bios so i can use a HDD, but I just can't seem to get to it. I would appreciate any help on getting to the QNX prompt so I can flash the bios.

This Thread suggest that this may Not be possible !
While I don't know about Remote BIOS Updates,
I Believe Remote QNX UpDates would Not have been a Problem.
I would Guess, any I-Opener that has called Home since the Release of the V5, could be Crippled.
The Patched V5 BIOS could be Your Only Answer ? ( &/or an OLD Sandisk/Sundisk Image ?)
BadFlash.com gives Prompt Service, just Email Him. ( jack@badflash.com )
or You could try Flashing Yourself !
( I am Hoping to get My First USED I-Opener Monday )

Are You Trying This ?
I-Opener Technical Info Reference (MODERATED) / V3 BIOS flash step by step
This Works Up to, But Not including Version 5's

I got the Used UnHacked V4b that had been used with the "Service" till sometime in January of this Year.
I was prepared to HotSwap the BIOS to get the Rumored New crippled Image from it, But No Problems !
QNX Flashed it just Fine ! YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary) Let me know If You have any Questions.

There is a different QNX flasher for the V4 than for the V3. I don't have it (for reasons that should be pretty obvious). See http://www.linux-hacker.net/cgi-bin/UltraBoard/UltraBoard.pl?Action=ShowPost&Board=technical&Post=1231
If that doesn't work, I have chips in stock.

Thanks for jumping in here BadFlash. You are Correct that V4s need to use QNXFlasher V1.02. &
as smogbound Posted, This Version Works with Winchip & Rise CPUs.

First off thank you for your quick replys. and second off, I read http://www.linux-hacker.net/cgi-bin/UltraBoard/UltraBoard.pl?Action=ShowPost&Board=verytech&Post=86&Idle=0&Sort=0&Order=Descend&Page=0&Session= and downloaded v2_image_with_qnxflash102.zip . My problem is after using dolly to write v2_q102.dat to my slave hd on the primary ide channel. That drive will not boot in either the host computer, or the iopener. When it boots up, it just loads the sandisk and the onboard QNX. Is the problem with my harddisk or with the QNX image? BTW, sorry for taking so long with my reply, I had 2 IBM DTLA305040's fail on me and I had no HDD to use dolly on. Thank you for your time.

No, I don't think this Image will Boot in a Regular PC.
You Have The Yamaha Sound Chip ?
Use DOS Fdisk to Check Partition Sizes. They MUST be Correct !
Some People have Reported Problems with this Procedure & IBM Drives.
(sounded to me like the C/H/S was smaller than Required to Simulate a Sandisk)

Another thing You could Try is to set the Boot Order in BIOS to "D,A,SCSI"

Well, the percentages for the drive distrobusion was 2 meg, 2 meg, 0 meg,and 10 megs. Yamaha soundchip? I'm not sure, I have a V4 with no goo, or clipped IDE pins, i have a rise mp6 266 cpu, and the sw4 voltage dip switches. I have tried almost every jumper setting possiable.

Problem: Can't get QNX to boot off HDD.

Setup:
I-Opener V4 BIOS Date 3-23-2000
IBM Deskstar 45gxp 41.1 GB 5400 rpm (DTLA 305040)
44 pin female - 40 pin male IDE Converter
Swapped 40 Pin IDE cable
I-Opener was connected to service till March of 2001.

Followed directions on the thread V3 BIOS flash step by step
at http://www.linux-hacker.net/cgi-bin/UltraBoard/UltraBoard.pl?Action=ShowPost&Board=verytech&Post=86&Idle=0&Sort=0&Order=Descend&Page=0&Session=.
It just won't boot the HDD, and it continues to load the sandisk. The problem seems to me like it is recogonizing correctly that in the standard settings, the primary master is set to none, and in the advanced menu, it is set to "scsi,d,a" so it looks as though the harddrive is not bumping the sandisk off, and it just continues to boot the sandisk. I was wondering if this problem with the HD not bumping the sandisk is attributed to a great deal of IBM drives. Question. In the IO when attempting to boot QNX off a HD, when in BIOS and using the "IDE HDD Detection" should the HDD be detected as the primary master, or should it bump off the sandisk completely and only detect the HD in the slave slot? Any help would be appreciated.

If I am reading you correct, 1 Error is the "the primary master is set to none"
This should be Auto in most cases, but could be Manually entered
(or Auto Detected ?) the same as listed for the Sandisk/Sundisk.
The Boot Drive should be Jumpered as Master.
(My Comment above about Boot Order in BIOS to "D,A,SCSI" is BS, I think !
I think this is how you would boot a DOS/LINUX Sandisk, with HD attached ?)

Well, IBM Hard Drives have been a Point of Concern.
as Well, as 40 gig, could be, with the Age of this BIOS. I forget where the Boundry is ???
Or, Power Demand on the I-Opener during SpinUp ?
You could Try a 3 1/2" Drive !!! ( @ Your Own RISK ! )

NEVER PUT POWER TO AnyThing ATTACHED to an I-Opener,
(except the I-Opener Power Supply as Normal !!! ) ( everyone has be warned ! )
Common GROUNDS are Allowed, If You Understand what that Means !

Yamaha Sound Chip: Look Here, Left, Center,
http://www.linux-hacker.net/imod/images/inside.jpg

In the V5, the Sound chip is Lower Left, above the PS/2 port.
(the 1/4 size White Square would be a Chip)
& You Can NOT USE this Procedure !

The End of this post is for Neophytes ! * StarFish *

I set everything to auto detect, and tried every boot sequence with different jumper settings, but it always seem to detect the primary slave as the sundisk/sandisk. when setting the hd jumpers to slave the IO still detects the sandisk as slave rather than the IBM, but when it only detects 1 HDD is present, it never seems to load the netpliance gui.

On Third Thought, & after another Drink ! This QNX Hack could Work,
with the HD QNX Image as SLAVE, & Boot Order in BIOS Set to "D,A,SCSI", Master Drive - None.
My Notes aren't clear on this point. & it was So Long ago that I was aggravated by this problem for @ least 3 Days, if Not a Week.

Oh, & a HELP Tip ! (Short Page of "UB Codes", (an alternative? to HTML, Here)

After re-reading the thread on IBM drives having problems, I decided to use my regular HD as the QNX host. After many attempts of forcing my Segate 6.5 gig HD to recogonize as slave. I finally quit. No matter how hard I try, no matter which jumper I select. It just won't bump sandisk off completely. The furthest I can go is to confuse the IO into thinking I have a 639 meg drive when I autodetect. When I manually set the geometry it fails to boot. Now I really am at a lost. I see no further options except to desolder the +5V going into the sandisk, or to purchase/reflash the bios from /badflash.com . Boy this IO is wearing me out.

Dude,

I would Bet You Need to Be Under 2 gig, Maybe even under 512 meg Hard Drive Size.
I have used a 10gig after the QNX Hack, So I don't mean the BIOS can't Handle these sizes.
We can Make it above the 8gig Boundry & as I posted Earlier,
I don't remember the Next Boundry for OLD? BIOS chips (But 30gig comes to mind)

BUT, I suspect the QNX HACK could be Limited to less than 512 meg Hard Drives, If Not Less ???

I am Making this up ! I only had to Find a Good Image, & fight FDisk. I used a Friend's 80meg.

Maybe Someone Else Knows ???

Well, I have made some progress using a anchient circa 1995 1.2 gig Maxtor, now when both the Maxtor and the Segate is connected, it will bump off sandisk, and they do autodetect the correct values for the Maxtor. But the problem is now it will only display "BOOT DISK FAILURE!" I guess my IO don't like me. =( I tried all the possible combinations of boot sequence with the Maxtor as the slave, and segate as master set to NONE. Any suggestions or ideas?

I am sure You thought of this, but you didn't type it
You have Good FDisk Partition sizes on the Maxtor ?
with the Maxtor HD QNX Image as SLAVE, & Boot Order in BIOS Set to "D,A,SCSI", Master Drive - None.
2 HDs connected would Not Look Good to BIOS/QNX Boot Checks.

Weird, it was my past experience with the segate and the IBM that led me to connect 2 HDD. But after reading your thread, I disconnected the Segate, and the Maxtor is set as Master and in BIOS C: is set to none. Auto-detect will detect the Maxtor as slave bumping the sandisk off. I set boot sequence to , D,A,SCSI, and I still get "DISK BOOT FAILURE!". I tried LBA, Large, normal and even auto for the HDD, but still nothing seems to boot the HDD.

Since I have an Interest in This Problem, I will make this Offer !
If You are willing to pull Your BIOS Chip & Mail it to Me, with Return Postage ?
I will KEEP IT , But I will Also Send back a Tested Known Good V5 Patched BIOS
(Same Day, Works Great in All Versions & You should be Booting any? Hard Drive @ that Point)
If I can't QNX Spoof it, then We will know there is something Different, &
I will get the Image for anyone that might be Interested in it.

Otherwise, I would still suggest a Hard Drive under 512meg.
