Do It Yourself
Can you get the parts together and build an I-appliance yourself for similar price?

I still can't believe how cheap these things are for the form factor (compact/light/decent power).
Has anyone looked into putting something like this together from parts? I see similar (better) screens going for anywhere from $60-$125 or so on eBay. Was curious if anyone seriously looked into this.

There is an active thread on upgrading the screen. You should get familiar with the search feature, you'll find all sorts of neat things that way. We've been at this now for over a year and many of the common "gee, wouldn't that be great" kind of stuff has been hashed out or is being worked on.

I'm not talking of only the screen - I am familiar with the search function, thank you.

If you noted the details below the title at the start of the thread, I'm talking of putting together a complete internet appliance from scratch. The screen comment was regarding the fact that the screens are probably the most expensive part.

Well, sure the screen can be expensive, but search the net for small form factor SBC's (single board computers) and you'll see why the iopener is/was such a great deal. Expect sticker shock for some of the boards out there....

An I-opener modified with a faster CPU is hard to beat.

With a laptop from e-bay with cosmetic case damage, unscrewing the hinges, bending the screen all the way back so it lays flat on the bottom of the case makes something similar to an I-opener. Most will be missing the power supply and batteries. Any regulated 12V supply usually works.

I did this with a DX4-100. Stuck it inside a box an mounted a picture frame on the front. It's too slow for most things; but works great as a digital picture frame.

Finding a "parts" laptop matching the I-Opener's price and performance is difficult.
