First I'd like to say thanks to everyone on this board. There is a plethora of information contained here and thanks to you guys I went from a know-nothing computer idiot to having my own little Win 98SE IO box. My next project is to build a second IO this time with Linux as the OS. It appears that everyone has their opinions of favorite Linux versions. My question is which one seems to work best in the IO? The distributions that I am familiar with by name are Red Hat, SuSe, Corel, Mandrake, and Slackware. I don't know thing one about Linux, but I'm just trying to avoid buying a version only to find out that it doesn't have the necessary audio/video drivers or usb/modem support or something else that would make life more difficult. Also, how would I format the hard drive to work with Linux? If I fdisk the drive in my desktop (a Win 98SE machine) won't it be formatted for FAT32? If you have any input, please make it easy to understand; I'm still no computer scientist. Thanks.

If you are new to Linux let me suggest jailbait distro (jailbait.sourceforge.net) There are instructions on how to set it up on the site and furthermore it is less than 16mb in size and will fit on the sandisk. If you are set on using a hard drive, then I would recommend RedHat, they have a pretty straightforward install. You could check out their site (www.redhat.com) for information on installing linux that is probably better than I could do.

Knowing nothing about Linux, could you tell me the procedure to change the start-up on Jailbait to look for hda not hdb? All I have is the downloaded image. Thanks

best option is instead of linux use bsd. I installed OpenBSD on a hacked IOpener in less than an hour over the weekend. Just put the hd into a pc, booted the OpenBSD install floppy, ran through the install (via FTP), put the hd into the IO and rebooted.

Only annoyance is you have to hit tab while booting in order to get the display out of graphics mode(nothin but net graphic) and into text mode to see the console.

After enabling USB in the kernel, the USB ethernet (kawasaki based), came right up. (I never could get jailbait to work with that adapter)

Can you get BSD on the 16mb sandisk with a browser?

curious,

I'm going to try to build a openbsd install for the sandisk ...

I won't be putting X on it, so the only browser that could be considered would be lynx. Even that would be a waste of space cuz in 16meg, you can't do too much.

I'm hoping it could be a reasonable router/nat box (with builtin console of course:)

Jailbait does plenty in 16MB, are you saying that OpenBSD can't?

I had jailbait on a sandisk for a while ... was ok, but cramfs made it difficult to tweak (at least for me). Also, I want/need sshd, ipsf, named, etc. Just a different set of tools from a user oriented box (as jailbait was laid out to do).

So, is jailbait secure?

Drat.. I was hoping you'd put together a SecureBSD with a graphical browser, X, SecureBSD logo, etc for us..

Cramfs isn't too bad.. but you have to work with it from a hard drive..

Secure Jailbait? hmm.. nope, not without modification.. it accepts unencrypted logins, exposes unneeded ports, and lots of other nonos.. but as you mentioned.. it was meant for a user machine not a server device..

Deadsock: Jailbait is _not_ secure. : )

You can mess with it and make it more secure. Once I graduate here, I'll spurt out JB7 which should be a lot better - busybox and tinylogin have really made some good progress since (*last year*)...

hope everyone's having fun. been a while since i've posted/checked stuff...
