Custom I-Opener Case, who wants one?

New MessageCustom I-Opener Case, who wants one? (modified 0 times) shaxs

Hello,
I was wondering how many people would be intereasted in a custom I-Opener case that is a tad bigger to fit all their mods in. Someone said the cad design for the mainstreet tech case was avaialable so maybe we can get ahold of that. If not, maybe we can get a custom made one all together. Please post here with the quanity desired and I will see if we can get this show on the road. I hope I get a good number of you!

If the CAD files can be located, I think the existing dimensions should be more than enough to fit most mods. Especially with the IMOD3, there is plenty of room inside the case. If anyone wants, I can take some pics of the case on my Iopener. Just need someplace to post them.

This from Mark regarding the possibility of making a production run:

My schedule is kind of hectic for the next couple of weeks(exams). I'll
call and get a quote later this week.

Also, Machine time is difficult to come by this time of the year. You
can expect at _LEAST_ a month lead time for manufacturing. Last time I took
a bunch of grief over the amount of time it took to fabricate.

I'll post something on my webpage in the next couple of days. It will
be a counter or button for people to express their interest and to help me
with a target price...

So...watch his site for a link. Or perhaps pester him with email to demonstrate interest.

I passed on this the first time around 'cause this was so deep it made the box look really ungainly and topheavy. Spoiled the essential elegance, don'tchaknow?

Would we consider shaving off 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch here?

These cases are *GREAT*! I purchased 6 of them back when they first came out, and was very happy with the results -- they fit the notebook CDROM drives exactly as advertised.

One great thing about the depth of these cases -- you can add a standard-sized CPU Fan without too much trouble. I ran a web-server off of a modified I-Opener, using this case.. I ditched the stand and let it sit on the far corner of my lab.

I actually came across these cases a bit too late. But I am REALLY looking forward to possibly getting a couple.
It appears that you could actually hookup a 3.5" HD in the case..?? Right..??

I am building one right now for a friend, and we will be installing it in his 62' Sailboat. GPS and such...
This case would be perfect..

I know the price on these will be different from last time, but how much were they before..??

Oh, and by the way,,, Count me in for 2.

Here are the links to the current and the archived pages.

http://www.mainstreettech.com/cases/index.html
http://www.mainstreettech.com/cases/previous.html

The autocad file is available for download if interested.

According to the web page, these cases went originally for $25 plus shipping.

This sounds like a dooable project, if we're patient.

I think the cases originally went for around
$40 ~ $45. When Mark started dumping them
onto Ebay they were selling for $25.
I would expect them to cost closer to the
$40 range.

I agree about making it thinner.
From the picks I think you could take 3/4" at least out. If there needs to be any work done on the CAD side I could help out with that. (I do it for a living) Also adding a few more port holes would be cool(as punch-outs).
Were these originaly machined or laser cut?
Seems to me laser is the way to go on this one. Punched would be better but I'm not sure of the die costs on that ???
I do not have good resorce for sheet metal fab so if any one does please post.
LMK if I can help out.

Hello All,
Well I am glad I decided to get this project started!! Seems many are intereasted. r_fl_z and I are collaborating off board on this too. I am probally going to leave most of it up to him since he is a well known and trusted person in the iO community. Now, for the removal of some of the space. I think enough space should be kept in order to fit a decent amount of mods. I for one want to fit my tiny power supply, my 3.5 20 gig hd, the serial controller for my touch screen, my usb nic, my usb sound card (may not need that now that my v5 just got toasted... no comment)and the serial port hack. With the way the case is designed now, I think everything should fit inside with some room to spare for maybe an extra fan.

(Clearing out the Closet..)

I have 3 of these cases available for $40 each + shipping.. unused/untouched.

I can also ship them out, pre-assembled with a 24x Laptop CDROM plus a longer custom IOpener IDE cable to connect the IOpener to the CDROM (of course) and your own Hard-Drive for an additional $120. (Note: The CDROMs I have are finicky, only working as "Master" -- the hard-drive must be set to slave. For best results the IOpener's SanDisk chip should be disabled via hardware mod.)

I also have one 18-Gig Toshiba laptop drive that I could throw in for an additional $90.

If you're interested, drop me an email. Thanks.

I have two industrial units with 10' LCD using the Biscuit MB. They are black cases with a very small footprint base containing ports and floppy drive. The bases are approximately 8" X 8" with screen part, about the size of IO and about 2" deep, attached together by a metal box. It is really, really, cool!!! All metal, black, goo-gobs of adjustments, room, small footprint, etc. I paid $86.00US each for them, both working with very decent color LCD. I would pay $86 just for the case alone. I've had them for a couple of months but no time to really play with.

I just got in a decent digital camera but yet to look at and use but can post pictures this weekend. I'll see if I can get more info on who made these cases. The hard drives still have Win95 loaded and some information left over from the company that they were used by originally. May take some tracking to find out who the manufacture of the case was but probably worth it as I think you guys will really like them. If I had more of these cases I would consider moving all of my IOs into them sans the base for the ones that I plan to wall mount.

Later

Hey, my favorite ed,

I got them on eBay. Actually paid $86 for one and $129 for second. Below are links for both auctions sans pictures. Oh my doG, now everyone will know who I am on eBay. One has a small mar on bottom part of screen, like someone hit it really hard with and object without piercing the surface, but it is not too distracting.

When I can grab some time I'll contact seller and see if I can get any more info. Might be able to get info from info on harddrive or crack er open. Having the time is the problem.

Project update:

The case quote will be in hand next week. The price will be dependent upon the expected interest, which appears to be reasonable. Once again, Jack at BadFlash.com will likely be handling sales.

It would help in the planning if I could trouble all seriously interested parties to drop me an email mentioning the quantity desired. This will likely be a one time run, so "get while the getting is good". Once I have a firm quote, and am able to commit to a firm price, we can open the discussion to possible size changes or other design modifications...or perhaps having two different cases produced.

Update:

We have a quote from the manufacturer in-hand. The price will be posted in a few days. The original case sold for $40 + $10 shipping, and we expect to meet that price, perhaps a little lower if interest is strong enough. If you haven't emailed your interest, please do so. This information assists in matching the production volume with the demand and may allow a lower price. Thanks.

Yes, they are. Each case comes with CDROM mounting brackets, all mounting hardware, and both solid side panels as well as a side panel with an opening to support a CDROM. (see my links above for a pic with Jacks inexpensive CDROM mounted in the case). The case is designed for a different drive than Jacks, so it takes a little hacking to install his, but it's no major deal. If you happen to locate one of the original drives that the case was designed for, it will be plug-and-play.

As soon as I can get my web guy to put them up on the website. Final cost is $45 each +$10 shipping for the first unit. Multiple units I'll reduce the shipping depending on what it costs extra. Each unit runs about 4 pounds and I can put 2 to a box. My order page won't be smart enough to figure exact shipping, so if it over does it, I'll credit some back.

Still working on Instructions, but if you think you can work without it (it isn't that complicated) E-Mail me and I'll show you how to order one even without it being on my web page.

Just so everyone knows, the mounts for the CDROM is exactly as in the original Mainstreet case. This is for a rectangular format CDROM. I don't have a list of CDROMS this fits. You may need to drill a hole and reposition some of the mounts depending on what sort of CD you have. This would look to be pretty simple, just position the mount where is needs to be using the CD you have as a template, and drilling a hole in the right spot on the case.
