What type of camera is the best for taking closeup pictures ?? There are some really good quality pictures taken by Tackhead http://briefcase.yahoo.com/tackhead_1999 and others, I have a HP C200 which takes great pictures from a distance but it takes really really nasty ones when I take real close up pictures.

I'v taken pretty good close up pictures with my camcorder which has a macro mode, but it's very difficult to focus and then grap the frame from it with a capture card. I have a really nice V5 IO that I want to get pics out now that I have added dual RS232 ports from the RS232 MOD and external VGA monitor port.

I know there is a macro adapter lense that is available for it, but it's somewhat expensive, Is this what I need or can anyone recommend a better camera? (Or perhaps a hack for the camera??)

The Wide View camera from x10.com (list is $79) will focus down virtually to the surface of an item. You need the kit that includes the 2.4GHz receiver, and the USB adapter, maybe $150 total (they constantly have sales and specials) but this setup will also allow you to do a webcam so there are more uses for it...

My pics were from a Canon Powershot A50, most of them with macro mode on. Canon's current low-end camera models appear pretty similar in terms of their optics. Good stuff. (And yeah, the macro mode makes a big difference!)

What you don't see is the number of pics I threw away. Some of 'em took two and three times to get the lighting right, or to make sure the flash didn't blind the pic. Sometimes I'd even partially-obscure the flash bulb with a piece of cardboard. I also edited many of the images after I took them, so what you see in the photo album ain't necessarily what you get straight out of the camera!

And Starfish's idea works too - if you have a flatbed scanner, try it!

I tried scanning mine with a Xerox Scanner - resolution was fuzzy - not best quailty. I am considering a Panasonic digital camera (with Macro feature) - just my .02
Thanks,

I think I may break down and buy the Tippon lense adapter that is sold for my HP c200 camera, I found macro lenses on eBay for a reasonable price. Any one know of a good place to get a Tippon lense adapter for a HP c200 or any other type of adpater for that matter ????

I tried the my flatbed scanner, it was not very good, I am going to try again tonight in a completly dark room, the daylight from the windows did some funky things to the image (all kinds of rainbow streaks)

BigDog (I love that since I have a here of really big dogs, "Da Bubs". The giants are 160 lbs. to 220 lbs. My small doggies are 60 to 90.)

Anyway, try laying several layers of dark material over the entire scan bed making sure no ambient light gets into area.

How close do you want to go? I bought an Intel USB microscope (about $60)....It removes from it's stand and will sit nicely on the m-board. It has three different powers...10x, 60x, 200x. The really nice thing about this camera, that's what it really is...a video camera with adjustable close ups....it has an adjustable output lite built around the lens. Makes for real close-ups. The smallest resistor on the board will fill the screen at 200x.

The thing has been sitting in the closet since my son lost interest in it, I may just give it a try!!

THANKS!

Yeah...that's it. Amazing device for what it cost. Depth of field is not very great, even at 10x, but for a relatively flat subject, it does a good job. I really don't know what you could do with it on an I-Opener. Do you really need a full-screen picture of q16 for instance?

Regarding digital cameras in general.....If you want clear, sharp pictures, a tripod is a must.....particularly on close-ups and in low light conditions. This Intel camera has a stand built into the lens....so it will stand on its own even without using the microscope stand. Thus, making it sturdy, movement-free tripod of sorts.

FWIW...I bought another Intel camera recently....called a Pocket PC camera. Best Buy had them for $59. It does double duty as a carry-around digital camera with 8meg internal memory and a really good web camera with a USB connection. It also has an adjustable focus and takes very good close-ups. I liked it so much, I went back and bought two more for gifts.
