For one thing - the I-Opener is Cool!

I am running Win98SE on it and am responding to this on it!

(I am a newbie too - so naturally - I think it's cool.)

Thanks,

Mr newbie.....you cannot exclude price from your evaluation of anything, unless you have more money than sense. I put my first I-Opener together for less than $150, using an old laptop drive, codeman cable and a Badflash chip. Anything even close to this setup would have been triple or more the cost.

That aside, anyone can put together a computer from store-bought parts...where's the fun/challenge in that? This I-Opener thing is a whole lot of fun....hacking is a whole lot of fun. Combining this with a relatively cheap starting point...how can you beat it?

The IO is an all in one PC that is smaller than a bread box. I have one in my kitchen running win98se. I use it to get recipes, it's my bar tender (no it doesn't actually make the drinks, but it tells me how to). I check e-mail with it. I even have active directory (yuk) running with local weather, a stock ticker and the New York Times on the desktop - all I do is move the mouse and I have a newspaper on my countertop - I never turn it off - it periodically dials the internet and syncronizes my desktop with current info. It is perfect for this type of thing. If Netappliance would have had a better service and better marketing...well anyway, they didn't. To paraphrase, the Iopener is cool.

The answer simply is "Cool-factor"...and size, and cost, and coolness.

It's an elegantly built computer. No, it's not as expandable as a desktop model, but with its USB connector, and a supporting OS, it is VERY expandable. It's more like a Laptop for youre Desktop. To me, the cool thing is not so much as its specs, but the creative things people have done with them. From using them as a full-blown computer to mounting them in their cars, from using them as Internet browsers to MP3 players, from use in an office environment to use in the kitchen, these puppies are flexible.

Oh, did I mention it's cool!
