Hey guys, tried a search but came up a little empty..hard to search for win98 splash= weird. I just got a new IBM 6Gig Travelstar for my V5. I have formatted it with Partition Magic and FDISK, and they come up with the same thing. When I boot my IO it lists the IBM as the Master and the Sandisk as the slave. I simply did a Sys C: when I formatted the HD to make sure it boots in the IO before copying 98SE on. Well when the IO gets past the autodetect, the screen quickly flashes the Win98 splash screen, then the bottom 1/3 of my display goes into vertical, colored bars. How can I have a Win98 splash screen when the drive is blank? All I can figure is somehow the Sandisk has wi98 files from a previous failed attempt by me (got 1/4 of the way through Windows install 2 months ago)or something like that. I have the BIOS set to boot C only, but I find it strange I'm seeing a Win98 screen and then the IO stops when the HD is BARE.. Any suggestions? I've been trying to get this thing running for a while.

Running IMOD 3 and Badflash new v5 BIOS

Thanks fellas,
typhoon

when you put the system files on the drive it puts the splash screen there as well. If you have some reason for not wanting to see it, edit the msdos.sys file and set the bootgui=0 line

otherwise you can press f8 when it starts to boot and choose command prompt only.

thanks Programmer. I don't mind seeing it, I just need it to go the C: prompt for me <grin>. The drive is configured as LBA.. could this be a prob? It just hangs literally 1 second after I see the splash and then the vertical lines stay there at the bottom of the scrren (2/3 win98, 1/3 vert lines) and it;s frozen. CTRL+ALT+DEL woan't work. Have to power down manually. Damn this thing is being a pain heheh. Again, all I did was sys C: it. Need to make sure it boots in IO b4 I copy Win98 cabs over. Losing my mind with this thing..
Thanks,
typhoon

My advise is to re-fdisk and re-format. Part Magic sometimes has problems with Win98. Just use plain Win98SE startup disk and setup a primary dos partition. Format with the /sys option and copy over the Win98 cab files and mode.com and the Via 4in1 drivers. DO NOT format your drive in any strange way. Be sure your IO is set for AUTO/AUTO and do not auto detect the drive on the IO using the bios function to do so.

Thanks Flash.. real quick though. What do you mean by use AUTO/AUTO yet DON'T let the IO config the HD? So go to Auto Auto on 1st BIOS screen, then the Detect HD settings screen in the BIOS and manually enter?
thx for the help.. I gotta get this thing Up.. it's KILLING ME!!!

I had the same thing happen. The problem is that the IO splash screen leaves the video system in a strange mode.

Make sure that you have MODE.COM on your boot disk, then have the autoexec run MODE CO80. You'll get the proper screen you're looking for.

BTW, for those who are looking for "just DOS", take a look at FreeDOS (http://www.freedos.org). I have it installed on one of my IOs, and it works just fine.

OK, I have been trying to find MODE.COM.. nothing came up in a search of this BBS, and google was no help either. Can you please email me a copy of this file and maybe a copy of your atoexec? I really need to get this thing up and running. Just to make sure we are on the same page, I posted a pic of what happens at:

Thanks for all the help fellas.

Under Windows 98, MODE.COM is put in C:\Windows\Command.

OK I am running Win2K Server on my machines, and I could not find the MODE.COM file on my Win98 CD. I did find MODE.COM on my 2K serevr though and tried it. I copied it to teh HD and tried to boot the IO. Still getting the same screen. Please see
http://web.tampabay.rr.com/jbranch/Iopenerhelp.htm
for the pic I poseted of what is happening.
So that I don't have to post anything else and take anymore of your time, here is what I have and have done:

V5 IO with Badflash BIOS (IO has never called home, modem is removed)
IMOD-3 with a 6 GIG IBM Travelstar HD (2nd one I have tried)

I set it up this way

Booted from a Win98 Boot Disk and ran FDISK
Setup a single 6 Gig Partition and made it active
Sysed the HD to make it bootable
(I did not copy any 98 or IO files to it b/c I wanted to make sure it wold boot into DOS b4 I wasted all that time transferring files just to possibly have to format it again)
Set IO BIOS to Auto on both the Primary and Secondary IDE channels, it sees both drives fine.

The link above shows what happens every time.
I copied MODE.COM from my 2K server system and the same screen appears..

I searched the FAQ and can't seem to find what the problem I'm having is. So many people just throw 98 on these things it and it runs.. my luck..

Please help fellas,I'm at Wits end and have my friend with his IO, 10G IBM, WinME setup laughing at me..(BTW he won't help)..
Thanks,
typhoon

you wrote "Sysed the HD to make it bootable"
can someone tell me, will an fdisked drive, then sysed.. Boot? without being formated? or, did I Miss something..??
btw, if you have a bootable HD, typing CLS should clear screen, and get you a prompt.. as I said earlier...

let me clear this up real quick.. yes I formatted teh HD after setting up the partition. Then I "sysed" it.. I;m assuming it should boot. cls does not work.. The IO is locked at that screen.

First, I don't think MODE will Help You.

I Guess, You Have a Software Driver Problem.
either the Video Driver is Mapping the Screen Wrong,
Or Something Later is Stepping on the Video Memory ???

I would try of Build of Win9X to Prove it is a Software Problem.

Good Luck ! * StarFish *

Hmmm,

I'm a newbie here - but did you try installing the vga drivers?

I had the same problem in Win 98SE (v3) - with the same problem of the video - once I installed the vga drivers - everything worked fine.

As a side note, until I installed the vga drivers (CyberBlade) - I was unable to get the display to show the fonts correctly either.

After I did this, I installed Win 2k Server - And all is well.

Thanks,

I had the exact same problem. Mine wasn't locked up though, even though it lookedd like it. I typed mode co80 and it restes the screen and gives you a c:\ prompt. ALternatively, I typed dir /p and it scrolled the bars awa and gave me a c prompt.

thanks guys, got it to go into Win98SE.. won't waste a lot of time but get this.. IT WAS THE KEYBOARD SPLITTER! My keyboard wasn't working so I couldn't type CLS to get the lines off the bottom. I found thoriginal IO keyboard, plugged it straight in and WHAM! I was rollin (slowly, but rollin) hehe..

Besides, check my new post for the new prob..hheh
