Radio Shack 20-Range Auto-ranging Digital Multimeter (DMM), #220-0806 or #22-806 (both numbers visible on packaging), on sale for $19.99 ($29.99 regular).

Don't let the 'Made in China' fool you. Make no mistake, this is a high-quality unit, superbly engineered and very ergonomic, and the best value in low-cost DMMs out there. The quality of the mouldings and the overall fit-and-finish rank with the best professional units costing 10 times as much. Best of all, it runs on 2 AAs rather than a 9v radio battery - which helps keep the total cost of ownership under control.

Items 22-802, 22-807 and 22-163 also deserve consideration.

Another one in the inexpensive-but-high-quality category: Bench Basics 33 pc. Power Bit Set (Screwdriver tips) - $2.99 at MacFrugal's. Includes various hex, torx, square, phillips, and slotted bits, all in high-quality sintered chrome-vanadium steel. The smallest torx is T-10 (too bad, the useful ones for electronics are T-5, T-6 and T-8), but it does include phillips #0 and #1, which are both very useful for laptop repair and other consumer-electronics work. It also includes a nice plastic holder with a rubberized feel.

:) I got 2 for $9 (+~$100 shipping), and my little bro (who told me about it) got one.. as near as I can tell, it's legit, tho my guess is someone took a few too many hits of acid on his lunch break.. still, if it shows up, the box lists for $3000 and all of those SCSI LVD HDs have gotta be worth something too.. My brother says he's seen stuff like that on there before, and as this batch didn't actually sell out, they may relist.. so keep your eyes out for a 1000+ more really cheap 8packs of harddrives...

Do note that the laptop drives have a flat cable connector rather than the standard header. But it is a through hole connector, so it can be desoldered and a ribbon cable wired directly to the board. The drive is an Epson SMD-1140, but can't find spec sheets on it. Oh well, I'll take a chance for $8.50....

Partition Magic 6.0 at Best Buy for 39.95 after $15 rebate. This as cheap as I ever saw it. This version also comes with Boot Magic, which runs a start-up program allowing you to boot any operating system, on any disk or any partition. For instance....you can boot DOS on your sandisk with Boot Magic, without changing any BIOS settings. It works with all file systems, including Linux. There is no other software quite like it. Linuxguru,

"Weird Stuff Warehouse", boy that brings back some fond memories from the Bay Area. It's good to know they're still around. There was another place in Milpitas "Surplus Stuff", are they still kicking? I remember Weird Stuff went after them for 'look and feel' infringement when they first opened, 'cause their signage and trucks were veeery similar to the 'Weird' font that Weird Stuff used. God, I miss California. The high fuel prices, unaffordable housing, rolling blackouts. Never mind. Gotta go fill the tank, Albertsons is at $1.39 a gallon today. God bless Texas....

I ordered a couple of 6 GB Fujitsu 9.5 mm drives after seeing Reverend_Jones's post above, from http://www.nomadjukebox.net/nomadjukebox/6gbfujlaphar.html , and I got a better deal than advertised.

One of the drives was a Fujitsu 6 GB, but the other was a Toshiba MK3017GAP 30 GB 9.5 mm drive! Perhaps they ran out of Fujitsus and started filling their orders with new 30 GB Toshibas instead.

BTW, the Fujitsu is a really smooth and quiet drive, and rarely (if ever) recalibrates, unlike some 2.1 GB and 3.2 GB Hitachis and a 4.8 GB IBM that I've used before.

Then use the coupon code "DEALJUNEWALK" at checkout for an instant additional 15 off. Finally print this rebate coupon and mail it in for another $25 off direct from Viking.

Iomega Clik! drive, retail package with one 40 MB cartridge and carrying case, $19.95 at Micro Center, Santa Clara (brick-and-mortar store).

Pros: This is a PCMCIA Type II card, so it can be inserted into a variety of notebooks, PDAs, digicams, etc. It is a driverless install (i.e. natively supported) in Windows 95. Linux may require Zip drive and/or ide-floppy support (requires further investigation). I will shortly be testing it in a HP 200LX to see if it is exactly equivalent to an ATA flash card.

Cons: It is the same technology as the bernoulli, zip, jazz, etc., so it will be affected by dust eventually. The replacement media is likely to be expensive.

Anyway, the uniqueness of the form-factor (Type-II removable media super floppy) and the price of $19.99 won out for me.

New MessageRE:Deals, Deals, Deals!!! (modified 0 times) Linuxguru

I just tried inserting the Clik! drive into a HP 200LX, and I discovered that it is not a true Type-II card, and will not fit mechanically into a 200LX (although it fits fine in all the notebooks I've tried).

In a gateway handbook running DOS 6.21 and the Cardsoft PCMCIA stack, the drive is recognized as an ATA Disk (drive D), but upon trying to access it from the DOS prompt, I get a "Not ready reading drive D" message.

So for now, it's restricted to notebooks running Win 95a or later, where it's natively supported. It's a good match for mini-notebooks without an internal floppy drive, like the HP Omnibook 300/425/430/530/600/800, Toshiba Libretto, Thinkpad 560/570/530, IBM PC110, and pen slates like Panasonic CF-01, Fujitsu Stylistic, etc.

Greenspark,
Reference your above statement regarding 02u2, In all fairness,
If you click on the link below and link read down the entire thread.
You will remember then that you yourself attempted to capitalize on a VERY OBVIOUS PRICING ERROR on the Gateway Connect touchpad website.
What 02u2 did in my opinion was not illegal at all, Questionable maybe? But not illegal. The store got the same exact value of what they had in stock and selling. The store that he EXCHANGED the memory suffered no monitary loss. They will resell the ram he exchanged at THEIR STORE PRICE of $69.00 and not $9.99 and still get their profit.

To clarify the transaction,
The memory was EXCHANGED for a different type of memory.
The store FREELY honors EXCHANGES no questions asked as long as the product is in a RESELLABLE condition.
The store will get there $279.96 plus tax when they eventually resell the memory unless they do a price reduction of there entire inventory of that particular flavor of ram.
Last time I checked the ram was setting on shelf priced @ $69.99 each
I NEVER do the rebate thing, unless it's an "instant rebate" I really hate mail in rebates so nobody is loosing anything on rebates except the company gathering of personal customer information for marketing and soliciting purposes.
The only thing I really may have done wrong is buying "4" of these $9.94 modules It was limited to "one per customer" in very fine print on the newspaper ad. But Staples happly sold me 4 modules no questions asked!
The other store CHEERFULLY EXCHANGED the ram for another brand no questions asked!
I ended up with 768 megs TOTAL of PC133 ram (2) 128mb sticks and (2) 256mb sticks at the stores current price. Just a different brand but still lifetime warranty by manufacture.
The $5.44 and more was spent in store.

Greenspark, Pot "trying" to call the kettle black eh?

Ref Gateway touchpad website pricing error "one of your many posts",
Oh, I see, it came up as $-52 since you added the extras as options within the GCT. I was looking for them elsewhere in the catalog. I sent in an order. I doubt it's going to go through, but hey, it's worth a shot.

To clarify the transaction, The memory was EXCHANGED for a different type of memory.
The store FREELY honors EXCHANGES no questions asked as long as the product is in a RESELLABLE condition.

For items bought in their store. It's a common policy.

The store will get there $279.96 plus tax when they eventually resell the memory unless they do a price reduction of there entire inventory of that particular flavor of ram.

If you went into the store and said, "Hello, I bought this for $40 at your competition, I'd like to exchange it for $280 in merchandise", at best they would have laughed you out the door.

There was nothing underhanded about the Gateway pricing. It was all in black and white. I was maybe expecting them to come back with a different price or tell me "no way". They told me no way. How you view the Gateway pricing has no relevance on your transaction.

Digging through old posts? Going a bit far to justify yourself, aren't you? Feeling a little guilty?

BestBuy has 128meg Sandisk CF chips for $99 after rebate.....note the prices of this media have been falling slowly, no telling now how much further it'll get.

FWIW....I use a USB CF reader to transfer small files to my I-Openers. It's fast and doesn't require a separate power supply. Can't beat it for ease of use.....

Greenspark,

Two words: Chickensh*t Hypocrite.

Unlike you, O2U2 had the balls to interact with a few HUMANS in this clever little score. Mad props to O2U2.

This kind of thing goes on all the time. Usually I see it happen with elderly people buying canned goods on sale at one store, and "returning" them at another, higher-priced store. Call it what you want -- I call it a clever survival technique. Especially considering most elderly folks are on fixed incomes and spend most of it on medicine.

OK, folks - cut out the flaming and get with the program. This thread is about deals. Getting back on track: The Clik! drives are back in stock at MicroCenter, Santa Clara for $19.95. This is a Type-II PCMCIA super-floppy drive and a 40 MB cartridge that fits into the PCMCIA drive, which is natively supported by Windows 95 and higher as a removable ATA drive. Linux support is with the ide-floppy driver, for kernel 2.2.14 and higher.

While at MicroCenter, I also picked up a copy of the Coriolis Press Core Linux Commentary (a styled after the classic Lions' Commentary on the Unix kernel) for $5.99 at the bargain books section and a nice padded carrying case that exactly fits the Panasonic CF-01 for $3.99.

WP,
Give it a rest. We're not talking about food for survival - we're talking about feeding a habit for fancier toys.

greenspark,
You ARE such a hypocrite, According to your posts when gateway had the pricing error you certainly knew it was an error but delibrately tried to take advantage of it anyway. Too boot, the only reason YOU STATED that you did not order "10" of the Touchpads is you were concerned it may "Raise a flag"!
Talk about FEEDING A HABIT, you have a real pigs habit.
Now are you still going to try and justify what you tried to do?
Or give it a rest?

Sorry guys, I just had to vent.

I'm giving it a rest.

To Codeman and members of this BBS,
I apologize to you guys for posting about the ram.
I really did not think it would be a real issue and now I see it's starting to muddy up this thread.
Lets let the issue drop PLEASE and get back on topic about

Deals, Deals, Deals!!!

Thank you,
02U2

On that last note, let's stop this thread right here. All the previous deals are probably gone by now. No sense making this thread any longer. For new deals check out Deals,Deals,Deals#2.
