A tip to all...Pay attention, Avoid distractions and have good lighting when working on electronic stuff! I was in the process of starting to test a Hitachi 3.2GB 9.5mm hard drive I pulled out of a "D-Dived" notebook.
One of the room light bulbs decided to burn out (Bad sign) but I decided to continue on using the existing room window daylight anyway. I hooked up the Hardrive to my desktop using the standard 3.5/2.5 adapter. One of my Cats decides he wants up on my lap...Awh nice kitty...
Power switch on...few seconds later...uh whats that smell...Oh shoot smoke!

I instantly though about you Glitch!

I destroyed both the the adapter (Burnt traces) and HDD, Sucker got hot! All my fault, Not my kittys. Kitty no like smoke either...

Been about a year since I let the smoke out of something.
And I thought I was done with the learning curve.

I did a similer thing to a 2.5" to 3.5" driver adapter when I wasn't paying attention and didn't get the pins lined up correctly when attaching 2.5" hard drive. The hard drive smoke leaked from the adapter, fortunatly the drive and the IDE interface on the computer survived as I have a check valve to stop the smoke in case of an leak.

I used my shop vac to collect the expelled smoke and used a small funnel to pour the smoke back into the adapter, unfortunatly I was unable to collect the electrons that escaped and they are running around wild in woods behind my house.

Just let the smoke run, it will find a new place where it can do the most good. I've been using my IMOD3 strictly as an adapter to format drives for my iO/WebPlayer/New GCT, and ran into the same issue as the posts above. I was loading files onto a drive for my GCT last night and suddenly smelled the scent of technology escaping. It appears that the bottom of the drive scraped through the solder mask on the IMOD3 and allowed my hi-tech (folded aluminum foil) laptop drive configuration jumper to short to the VCC on the IMOD3. Took a little while to figure where the aroma was emanating from until I unplugged the IMOD3 and saw soot on my finger. Fried the trace on the bottom of the IMOD3 all the way from the power connector to the bend in the trace, a good 3 inches, and burned the board nicely besides. Jumpered around it with a piece of ribbon cable wire, back in business again. Guess I'll just have to find one of those laptop jumpers one of these days, and be a little more diligent in the interim....
