Pardon me for being off topic. I'll gladly take this off line with anyone who would like to discuss it if the board would perfer that. firstname.lastname@example.org
I recently bought a Ceiva http://www.ceiva.com digital picture frame for Mom and Dad. $200 with a $100 rebate (net $100) at the GoodGuys a few weeks back. You subscribe to download pictures via modem at night. No other way to load images (they admit to). Seems perfect for my folks and worth the subscription cost. Have not given it to them yet.
Then I got concerned that Ceiva will go out of business and my folks would have no way to load images. (The huge rebate suddenly seemed like a bad sign to me.) I've been reading here for about a year and thought you guys might have a few thoughts about it. I searched the net, but did not find anything related.
Hackable? Could it set it up to call a different number in the future? Is there a way to monitor the modem communications and see what handshaking is happening when it calls home? (I'm figuring by now these guys have gotten wiser and made their products less suspectable to a simple hack.)
I suppose the answer to these questions are "sure", but the difficulty of it remains an issue. Anyhow, I'd appreciate any thoughts you guys might have... while I still have time to return it!
