Finally got my Iopener running, car install questions

Well after some time, I dug out my Iopener and finished mod-ing it. Win98 SE, cyberblade drivers work great and I am awaiting a USB hub. My plans....
1. Install in my Stealth and use to datalog 1/4 mile runs using my TMO datalogger
2. MP3 into my Kenwood head unit via USB - RCA preamp outs
3. GPS eventually.

A few questions for anyone using the Iopener in a car.......

- I have a Radio Shack laptop power transformer to supply 19V... if I hook up to a constant power line in the car, will voltage drop when I start up the car?

- Does your display flicker when hooked to your car? My laptop used to flicker when the car was running, I am assuming it's from the dirty output from the alternator.

- How is visibility in the daytime? My windows are tinted very dark so I am not too worried about too much glare.

One more comment..... I am online right now with the Iopener and download times are better than my home PC, almost a shame to stick it in the car and not keep it in the living room as an internet terminal. I love this thing !!!

Visibility is poor to very poor on bright sunny days. I have dark tinted windows. Darker limo tint on back windows.
I recommend not having your i-Opener on when starting the vehicle(My opinion). Powerline spikes/surges are generated then and may possibly damage your unit over time. Automotive 12v is usually very hostile to unprotected electronics. I don't trust the power adapter to filter out or clamp some of these spikes/surges.
Connecting power adapter directly at the vehicle battery reduces some inline noise. Hefty ferrite beads work well on RF noise. (I have mobile radio systems installed too).
Also if you do a processor mod and cpu/mobo temps are below max rating on work bench, watchout in car on hot summer days! everything may skyrocket way past critical temps!
The constant heating and cooling (wide temp swings) of cheap electronics is not good either. Over time they will fail!
I have a uniden MR-8100 and a couple other boxes that died after 2 years of setting in the sun then getting blasted with A/C.

One more thing...Someone else may like your i-Opener too! You may find it missing when you come back to your car. It does attract attention! An auto alarm may help ward off amateur thiefs...but you may still end up with broken window glass all over your seats and floor...

I barely drive my car anymore and it's kept in a garage but good points none the less on the theft issues. I was thinking about using a seperate marine deep cycle battery for the I-opener with a switch to allow the cars alternator to charge it. It's more complicated than I like. The main problem is waiting for Windows to load after I start up the car. At the drag strip I shut down in the staging lanes to keep the underhood temps down and only restart the engine right before I run, which leaves little time for restart. I was going to run DOS but the logging software I have is limited in DOS mode and I would rather have Windows for the GPS and MP3. So I think I will see how it goes and hopefully there will not be any spikes when starting up. I will run a direct line to the battery like you suggested.

Thanks for the tips,

Oh, I am also CNC machining a custom back cover to hold my HD and provide better cooling so hopefully it will not heat up too much. I do have a 200mhz chip from the factory and I my A/C stopped working years ago so I don't have to worry about the temp swings as much.

- I have a Radio Shack laptop power transformer to supply 19V... if I hook up to a constant power line in the car, will voltage drop when I start
up the car?

Yes, There is a Voltage Drop. BUT the "SPROGGY" & "Patrick" DC Inverters I have are Spec'ed down to 9VDC.
I only had a Problem when I First installed the Inline Cig Lighter Socket. I Needed a Better Ground than I Used.
You Might want to consider running a Ground wire to the Battery also.
Often I will Power On the I-Opener Before I Start My Car.
& I will leave the I-Opener on for a Few Hours If I am Shopping or Eating.
I would also Recommend an Inline Fuse. I don't Fuse my First socket as The 3 Socket Spliter I plug in Next is Fused.
Both of My Moble Power Supplies will Blow the Fuse Sometimes when the I-Opener is pivoted on its stand.
The Power Plugs are Not Exactly the same as the Wall Wart's. (I haven't figured out what is Shorting where)
I think the Answer is to use the Wall Wart's Plug If You aren't going to Need it in the House

I wouldn't consider a Spare Battery unless
You are thinking about leaving the I-Opener Running more than 6 - 12 hours with the Car not running.
If you do the Spare Battery, You want a Big Diode on a Big Heat Sink,
it's called a "Battery Isolator" they sell them for Spare Batteries in RVs.
I Don't like the Switch Story.

Also, My Power from the Battery, I Ran thur a $10 Audio Noise Filter from Radio Shack.
Since I like to Abuse My Equipment, I thought this might Help it Last Longer.
(I have a Spare I-Opener for when I find this System's Limit !)

- Does your display flicker when hooked to your car?

NO, I have Never Seen this.

- How is visibility in the daytime?

I pulled into a WENDY's Drive thur & the Girl asked Me, "Isn't it hard to Type while You are Driving ?"
I Explained I Don't Type while I am Driving ! I am Listenig to MP3s & Looking @ Maps from the GPS.
WinAmp has Keyboard Shortcuts & the Maps seem to Always be Viewable. YMMV * StarFish *

Hmm, any of you all have this problem? :

If my Iopener is on before I start the car, when I turn the car on, the screen goes haywire and is completely jumbled up and I have to restart the system to have the screen back to normal.

upon returning from LCD Off (Screen Saver) I have had a Bad Screen a few times.
Very Rare, Screen is Trashed @ Pixel level, looks like threads or fabric ???
Cycle Power is my only option.

Well I installed it last night and everything works great. I did not find a constant 12V yet but that's next on my list. It's sunny today and I am happy with visibility. Belkin USB hub works also with 2 serial ports and Parallel port. Next step is USB audio out to my Kenwood head unit.

>I did not find a constant 12V
I would Really Recommend connecting right to the Car's Battery.
