While I certainly appreciate the intent of the "Deals" threads, I'd like to point out that there are other sources for this type of info, usually with a broader readership, resulting in even more finds, usually updated hourly. www.anandtech.com is one such place. Look in the Community/Hot Deals category.

SteveInNC: The "narrow readership" of this page is probably an advantage. If I find a really good deal I usually tell my best buddies first, then wait a day for them to act on it. Then I will announce it somewhere on this BBS. Usually a few days later it will trickle out to Anandtech, TechBargains, etc. By using this method your local friends and BBS friends get first chance at the deal. I do it this way because the great deals usually go pretty fast. I would rather have people I know benefit from the deal than complete strangers. I hope that others here feel the same way.

MicroCenter has several $399 LCDs on sale, including an NEC/Mitsubishi 1530V (15.1") which appears also to have built-in speakers. I have an NEC Z1 w/15" LCD and it's spectacular.

I was in there just the other day, and was surprised by the differences in LCD quality from one monitor to the next. Might've guessed they'd all look pretty much the same but there was quite a wide variance, so much so that I've decided if I go after one I will have to see it first.

Hoping we can hack-into the IBM Netstations so I can put mine to use w/a new LCD!

Looking for an expansion chassis for your IOpener? Here is a brand new IBM docking station with a 24X CDROM and expansion for a hard drive for $25.33. Just buy an external IDE cable from BadFlash and who knows? Maybe it could be a rival for ckbone's slick IOpener docking/base station Hack?

Old_Dog.....your link to me to a Compaq unit. I can't tell too much from the posted specs. It runs off 110v....why? Maybe has an internal power supply to run some 12v stuff. No info on what type of cdrom....it probably has some non-standard interface (not 44 pin). That would make necessary a special adapter...not easy to find. Anybody know anything else about these units? Price is right.

Deal of the day: 32mb compact flash $20 after rebate from CircuitCity. Centon brand....you could buy three units max.....

Oops, your right! That's a Compaq unit not an IBM unit.

I downloaded a PDF of the specs and illustration. It really doesn't help much. However, the fact that it states that the expansion bay can accommodate a ZIP, LS-120, or second hard drive leads me to believe (optimistically) that the second interface on the IDE channel is standard. Also, hopefully, with a separate power supply the unit might be rigged to run a powerleap or a turbochip adapter. I have one V2 up and running and two more still sealed in the box. I have to do something with them, so maybe I'll just buy one and see.

I'll let you know!

Staples just had ANOTHER "Grand opening sale" This morning, This time one could get an Epson printer and a Flatbed scanner for $9.99 each! Pny "black in color" CDR media for $5, etc.
I saw the Sunday newspaper "AD Flyer" 20 minutes before opening today while having my coffee, Made it there just as they opened their doors. I was at the end of a line of about 50-60 people.
Got a printer and scanner! there was about 3 or 4 left after I grabbed mine. They lasted 30 seconds... $21 bucks out the door!

I wonder how many more "grand opening sales" staples is going to have?
Love these loss leaders!

OK....this is the last time I'm going to report ram prices. BestBuy has PNY 128meg sodimm for $19.99 after $10 rebate. If you haven't upgraded to 128meg, now is the time.

FWIW...There are at least two types of this PNY ram....one with Toshiba chips, one with Hyundai chips. The Toshiba type is faster, although the specs are the same. You can see the chip brand through the plastic container. Try to get the Toshiba type......

BestBuy had a lot of stuff on sale today. I found a pile of new Canon BJC2110 printers for $26.99 after rebate. These are nice, small printers, USB and parallel. They have both color and B/W cartridges.....the B/W go for $7.50. They would go with an I-Opener really well.

Hi,
Not sure if this quite qualifies as a "deal deal deal" but buy.com is selling 256MB CF (Kingston type 1 I believe) for $167.95 and there is a $20 mail in rebate lowering the cost to $147.95 after mail in rebate. If you buy $250 or more $25 comes off. Thus any other $90 item will get you $25 off. The page for the CF is at http://www.us.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10265781&hdwt=30421&loc=14617

and yes I know you can buy a dozen of them for $2 each on ebay (with Linux and W2K loaded no doubt)... this is for those who are ebay allergic

Not directly I-Opener related, but here goes:

HP Kayak XU P-II/400 (dual CPU capable, but only one CPU installed) server (tower). $299 at WeirdStuff Warehouse, Sunnyvale.

Sun Sparcstation 10 pizza box (dual CPU capable). $100 at Weirdstuff Warehouse. There's considerable quantity of these, so it looks like some dotcom imploded (or maybe these are being unloaded by Sun themselves).

Black canvas carrying case for Fujitsu Stylistic 1000 RF (with hole for antenna). $12.50 at Halted Specialties, Santa Clara.

Combo ISA 56k modem and 10BaseT NIC, with integrated 4-port 10BaseT hub, all in one half-sized ISA card. $17.50 at Halted Specialties, Santa Clara.

Course, if you really want to get fancy on the Palm/40gb deal. Look closely at the rebate forms and you will realize that they both ask for COPIES of the UPC, not the original. If you were in the mind to do it, you could buy them, photocopy the UPC' submit the rebates and then return them unopened for free rebate cash. What... I cant help it if they slipped up in their wording on the rebate.

Umm.. no thanks, Postal Fraud's not my idea of a good time..

The thought did cross my mind to sell the Palm on eBay, they still get about $100 for so for them un-opened. But, it's really not worth my time, and besides, I really wanted both items. I can use my IO as a data entry terminal for the Palm, and the 40Gig as MP3 storage. Those new 40G drives are pretty quiet, and I use the Computergate IDE trays for all my IDE drives now for easy swapping.

Bestbuy has the MAG LT501 15" LCD Display advertized for $350 plus $50 rebate.

I got one new in box this morning and it has a good picture. I'm using it right now.
.297 mm Dot pitch and 1024x768 Res.
I looked at it side by side with a few others and it seems to be the brightest of all on display and better response time IMHO than the Viewsonic.

One thing is, there is 1 stuck on pixel near the lower center of the screen on this LT501.
I'm exchanging it in a few days.....
Otherwise for the price I GOT it for I'm happy ($250+ tax Not including rebate.
This will work great as a replacement display for the Toshiba P-III 700 notebook I scored on a few months ago.

Yeah....LCDs are dropping in price. That Mag LCD at BestBuy is a pretty good deal...$299 after rebate. It also pivots....this adds at least $100 to the cost of most LCD monitors. Too bad it only has a one year warrenty.....and the Samsung sitting right next to it (570v) had a much better/brighter display. I finally broke down and bought a KDS Rad5 at Sam's Club....$350 no rebates. I swear it has the best picture of any LCD I ever saw, and I've been looking at these things for over a year. The Rad5 also has a three year warrenty and it's the thinnest one I ever saw...you gotta see it. Look at the back...only one cable going to it. The power cable is inside the data cable...super clean setup. Even comes with a matching mouse..... I love the thing. Almost makes me want to dump my I-Openers....

I've found bargains at compgeeks before, so when I was looking for a server/storage box for home, I went there and found a Dell GXa OptiPlex MiniTower w/Enhanced Manageability(refurb) for $159. It has a 300MHz PII, 5 and 4 PCI/ISA slots, 3 external 5.25 bays (1 w/a 32x CD-ROM), 2 internal 3.5" bays (1 w/3G HD), Floppy drive, 64Mb RAM (3 DIMM slots, 2 filled), Built-in ATI 3D Rage Pro AGP (2M upgradeable to 4M), 10/100NIC on Mb, 2 USB, Crystal Audio on Mb (line-in, line-out, mic), 2 Serial, 1 Parallel, 2 PS/2. A Nifty hinged case (no tools needed). Whew! And all the PCI/ISA slots are vacant! No software, only accy was a power cord, but all docs are on Dell's website.

Shipping was $21 (it was well-packed) so for $180 I have a full-functioning and reasonably fast computer that I'm typing this on just 2 hrs after unboxing (my own mouse, kbd, and monitor). And it's absolutely brand-new, I mean not a scratch or fingerprint. I'm not affiliated w/compgeeks in any way, but this to me is pretty amazing. I'm very pleased.

I wonder what other deals the future holds for us out there, as the economy continues to tank...

WELL boys and girls, sorry to say I sold my IO but I still drop by here now and again... Here's my contribution, now that I've scored some for myself:
Not for use in IOPENER, but anybody interested in wireless ethernet? Staples has 1.6Mbps PCMCIA and PCI cards, proxim symphony cordless brand, for $50 bux apiece!!! I just bought out the last 2 cards in N. Attleboro, MA, but I'm sure there are some around. These cards got GREAT reviews and have support for almost every OS, even XP on the PCMCIA version! In any event, these babies are good for around 150' and peak at 1.6Mbps, which is just fine for web surfing, and the SAME CARDS on staples.com are $133 for the PCI and $145 for the PCMCIA, they must be liquidating their in-store inventory for some reason. In any event, good hunting all and hope you find this useful!!!

Note I did not have any trouble getting docs from Dell's website, in fact I researched the thing that way before I bought it. Outstanding docs from Dell methinks.

128 MB PC100 SDRAM 144-pin SODIMM, 16M x 64 bits (8-chip) 3.3v unbuffered - $9.95 at Fry's, no irritating mail-in rebate. Works fine in the I-Opener. SKU #2676072.

These are high-quality, with gold-plated contacts, Mitsubishi M2V28S30ATP x 8 chips. These DIMMs are lower profile than the PNY 128 MB 16YFS DIMMs which were on sale earlier at Best Buy (which also work well on the I-Opener). However, the PNY parts have series-termination resistor packs on all signal lines and are likely to have higher noise immunity. Also, a close examination of the signal routing on the PNY parts reveals "wiggly" strip-line delay routing - indicating that it was designed with timing margins in mind. The PNY parts have thinner traces and finer routing and via dimensions and spacing. Not tested either of them at higher FSBs, though, but both should work at 100 MHz.

Anyway, both work in the I-Opener. The PNY parts are also $9.95 at Best Buy (with mail-in rebate, YMMV). The Fry's parts are $9.95, regular price.

Vtech Helio PDA, being closed out at CompUSA for $29.88. This 75 MHz MIPS-based PDA runs a proprietary OS + PIM suite. However, there are at least 2 minimalist Linux distributions under development for this platform, so it's worth the price of entry. The unit has 2 MB Flash / 8 MB DRAM on a daughtercard, so the first order of business is to figure out if a replacement daughtercard with, say, 16 MB of Flash and 64 MB of DRAM can be designed.

The closeout is over a month old now, so be prepared to snag the display models if need be. Remember to get the docking cradle also (without it, the unit can be used as a stand-alone organizer, but cannot hotsync with a PC or download software).

Gateway Accessory Store has the Lucent Orinoco RG-1100 wireless access point kit for $269 and free ground shipping. The wireless kit includes the access point (which has a card), one USB adapter and one PCMCIA, pretty good deal, the cards are the Gold cards with 128 WEP unlike the RG-1000 which has just the Silver 64 WEP.

I got mine running quickly off my cable modem and running wireless to my main PC and the kids PC, I am using a Hawking Tech router/firewall to go into a switch which my ethernet network is on which the RG-1000 is attached connecting the wireless cards. It all works pretty good. Of course after I got it in I had to take them apart, the RG-1000 has a Gold card in it (the RG-1000 has a modem too, to dial out to your ISP) and the USB adapter has a Gold card, so for $269 you are getting three Orinoco Gold wireless cards and the AP and USB adapter. 3 Gold cards will cost you at least $260 + shipping on eBay not to mention the AP and USB adapter.

I compared the price for the Linksys AP at my local Staples and Office Depot which was $169, USB wireless adapter and PCMCIA card adapters were $230 making the total $399 plus tax. Mine through Gateway was $279 which included free shipping and $10 tax.

After entering store announcement on the PA We are now closing....
I asked a Kid working the floor if there was any of the 384 Memory combo left
He said just a minute I'll check I'm sure there is! I had my doubts but he asked the Manager and came back with 2 packs!
1 256 pc133 PNY with the Norton antivirus CD in it!
1 128 pc133 Remarked C-USA brand.
Wooo Hooo I expected a hassle at the checkout with the Pny package but no problemo! This is one of the very few times I had found a C-USA employee that actually was very helpful!

YMMV, but I picked up a Soyo K7VTA Pro Duron/Thunderbird (to 1.2 GHZ, maybe more with OC) Via KT133A ATX motherboard for $19.90 (regular $79.90).

(Hint: Examine the stickers for clues to the nature of defect/reason for return. Mine was missing the ATA/66 and floppy cables).

Also got a Socket-A Thunderbird (Athlon) 750 for $24.90. It's not on the display at most Fry's, but some have a few left in stock that shows up on the store computers.

I'll test it shortly, but this is a green die (Austin) TBird that has rarely overclocked to 1 GHz, so I don't have any great expectations. Still, $24.90 + $19.90 for MB + CPU was a pretty sweet deal.

Blame the 'Shack. =)

From the back of the package:

The Radio Shack Acoustic Pad absorbs echoes and vibration to help reduce the tin can effect common to conference calls. Just place the durable 3/16" pad under your phone and you get enhanced sound quality for clearer communication.

In reality this is your basic XXL size mousepad at 12.5" x 12.5", with a standard cloth cover.

A little large for the Dexxa, but MS Explorer mice should feel at home.

Heh.....I found the RadioShack Acoustic mat Kudzu posted about. 99 cents....They only had one left but took orders for any amount. I bought 10 with free shiping to my house for $10. These make a monster mouse pad but I'm going to use some of these to line the inside of my main computer to quiet it down....I've seen this done with other pads. These mats should work well. They're about 12" square.

Here's a pretty good deal from BestBuy....don't know if it's just local. Buslink USB floppy drive...works without a power adapter. It can be mounted horizontal or vertical. Haven't tried it in XP yet, but it works fine in W98. $22 on clearance, with no rebates involved.

The only problem is that they insulate as well, so keeping an eye on the airflow & case temps will be a necessity.

The heat radiation from the case sides is minimal at best....but you do get noises amplified by those flat panels. The airflow through this case is maxed out....that's why I'd like to quiet it down. The case temp and the CPU temp rarely get over 32c....this is with a PIII 733, two IDE hard drives, a SCSI sub-system running a hot IBM SCSI drive, and a SCSI DVD-ram drive plus a CDRW drive. There's a wind tunnel effect in the thing...complete with noise. It's plenty cool.

is because they are really 'quantums'.
maxtor bought quantum recently.
the drives have been relabeled as maxtors but they are quantums, the chips say quantum.

My most frequent D-Divin finds on harddrives are Quantums....Usually something seriously wrong that is not easily fixed unlike maxtor or western digital.
Personally IMHO I will stay away from using Quantums due to considerably higher failure rates than others. I'm looking at the amount trashed aspect....

Circuit City B&M is selling the Kodak DC 3200 1.2 (1280x960) megapixel camera this week for $59.99, online still has it priced at $79.99.

I bought a floor model a while ago....no software, no cable, etc. It's a pretty good cheap camera. You do need a CF card to make it useable(the 2mg internal memory is lame). Also you need a card reader for fast file transfer. I didn't get the special cable, so I cannot access the internal memory anyway. You don't need any special program for the photos...they're jpegs.

The pictures are good, but the flash will wash out the faces in a portrait, unless you put something over the flash to reduce it. It does use AA batterys, a plus in my book. Overall....very good for the price.

One problem there sport.

It wasn't an advertised special, more of a chainwide PM with another retailer, which is why they're a little slow in updating the shelf tags.

If it says $109 at the store, take it up front and have them scan it. The price is $59.99 at all the B&Ms, the online pricing is a separate matter, it is considered to be a different division of the company.

The megapixels are different because each company is using different sections of the specs.
The CCD is 1.0 Mpx, the overall Mpx is 1.2. This is why the Kodak & Circuit City measurements are different.

I have yet to see a 2.1 Mpx listing anywhere for this camera.

Drove all the way across town (30+ miles of sucky H'Town traffic) for one of the Kodak DC3200s, only CC in Houston that said that they had any. Talked to the manager on the phone, he said they had 4 come in on the morning truck. After leaving work early and getting there, surprise surprise, they can't find 'em. Also missing 3 other 'high dollar' cameras from the same shipment. After getting jerked around for almost an hour while they looked all over and called other stores to see if they ended up elsewhere, still no camera. After gently expressing my displeasure at the troubles I incurred all for naught, I struck a deal with the manager for an 'open box' store display model of the Kodak DX3700 with 3.1 megapixels, 3x digital zoom, 8MB internal and USB interface. Already marked down to $149, I asked for his best effort to make me a happy customer and walked out with it for $99. Cheapest online price new is $225 and it checks out completely good and is physically in great shape. Wheeee!

and somewhere in H'Town a Circuit City truck driver is having his own little camera sale....

Great deal on the Telex......I got one running on an I-Opener, XP and W98. I did get new drivers off the Telex website before I did the install. No sweat at all...well worth $20.

Hey gang. Is this as a good a deal as it looks? Read carefully, it looks like what you get is a book PC case, mobo w/tv out and a DVD player. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2011408820 Seems the MOBO and DVD player are worth the price. I've been looking for a small form factor board with tv out to make a car PC with.
