Thanks to the great information and help on this message board, i'm now a hacker. It was quite an experience, and I definitely agree with the person that said "sure you can buy one already hacked, but you won't learn anything". I've learned a ton, and i've been working with computers for years.

I now have a great V4 i-Opener, and even though it's fairly "stock" with the Rise chip and 32 megs of memory, it's great for surfing, checking e-mail, etc. What the real advantage of upgrading the memory? Is it worth it?

I only wish the display was better, so I may just do the VGA out mod and use a regular monitor.

Since I get the impression that I can spend all of my time and money adding accessories to my IO, what would you start out with?

My initial plans are a basic audio out, probably using the Adam Lotz speaker wire hack, but I may just try USB speakers. I would also like a CD-ROM drive eventually.

Also, does anyone use the SanDisk for anything? I remember seeing something about installing DOS on it, in case your HD fails so that you can at least boot to DOS.

Doing this hack is definitely worth the time and effort, honestly. I'm just glad I didn't end up with a gooped BIOS chip. I was lucky I guess.

Thank you again to everyone!

First thing to do....upgrade the ram. 128meg chips at BestBuy sell as low as $25. The speed-up of the whole system is dramatic. Second thing to do....start tweaking the OS. It's free....you can get some real gains in many areas. Go to the MS update site....download the Updated video driver. Install the VIA 4in1 v4.32....your screen will look much better......keep tweaking.

Thanks, ckbone. Adding 128 megs is about half the cost I thought it was. In fact, I was just searching eBay and saw them going for less than $20 new. But, since the shipping cost brings it up to the Best Buy price, I think i'll buy off-line.

I did install the video driver to get to 800x600. It was a great improvement. I never would have stayed at 640x480, it was terrible. I used a Trident Cyberblade video driver that I found a URL for after doing search on this board. Since i'm not actually using the IO to post this message, i'm not sure what version it is. What is the most current?

Regarding tweaking the OS, can you be a little more specific so I know what to search for? Thanks.

Oh, one more thing, my sound doesn't work. I searched for "audio driver" but there were so many results that my browser kept crashing. Is there something I need to do, or a driver for the audio too? I don't have the Yamaha chip.

Thanks again...

Apparently you have a V5 I-Opener (no Yamaha chip on-board). To get sound, you need a V5 patched BIOS chip from Badflash. You enable the on-board sound in the BIOS settings, then you can install the sound driver, available off the VIA.com website.

The video driver is available many places, but the site I got mine is no longer up. The MS update site will show a driver that is most current....works well. It'll just update the one you have. For the monitor setting, use "Laptop or LCD 600x800" in display settings.

There are many tweaks that will help you...try some of the ones mentioned in this topic: http://www.linux-hacker.net/cgi-bin/UltraBoard/UltraBoard.pl?Action=ShowPost&Board=technical&Post=2142&Idle=0&Sort=0&Order=Descend&Page=1&Session=

If you want a new ram chip, I've got an extra 128meg genuine IBM chip that works just fine. I'll let it go cheap....
