Using a USB NIC

I'm in the process of modding the I-opener and I will be using my sweet cable modem access instead of a paltry modem. I have the Linksys USB NIC in mind. Will this work on the I-opener?? I will be using WinME so drivers are no problem but I was concerned about the voltage output of the usb port. Is it simply a standard USB port adhering to general specs or does it utilize a different power requirement?

It's a standard port, most USB devices work just fine. Be aware many persons report various problems with USB network cards. I think some of these devices draw slightly too much power, the warplink USB adapters for instance. Badflash has a new BIOS chip that may fix some USB problems...

I use the Netgear USB-to-Ethernet adapter EA101 and it works great, no problems.

Be aware that there are two versions of the Netgear EA101.
I had the misfortune to purchase an EA101c. It was made in
China and apparently has a different chipset in it than the
plain EA101, which was made in Japan.

I have had very good luck, both under Windows and Linux, using
the D-Link DSB650 adapter. It's available at CircuitCity for
$30. Too bad, they had a mail-in rebate of $20 on it a few
weeks back.

The Linksys USB100TX works very well with the 2.4.x Linux kernel(what Red Hat 7.1 uses). It only worked OK with the 2.2.x kernel(received worked well, sending was pathetically slow, lights didn't work).

The USB100TX is a 10/100 NIC. While you won't get the full 100(USB's throughput maxs at 12), I had to use one because my hub was 100 only so a 10 only NIC would not have worked.

Thats cool, I have a linksys USB 10TX somewhere around here. Since you have a 100TX and it works then I know the 10TX will as well. Cool thanks everyone.

The word is out that the D-Link DSB650 adapter will
be on sale at CircuitCity starting Sunday. The price
will be $25 with a $20 manufacture rebate and a $5
CircuitCity rebate, so just sales tax for you area.

Hi,
Maybe I'm a bit late to add much here, other than to say I believe most I-Openers which network do so via USB NIC's. My understanding is some of the older 10 (not the 10/100) usb adapters (and the wireless warplink adapters) had issues.

I've been happily using a SMC 10/100 wireless usb for well over a year now on several I-Openers, and currently have 3 (actually all 3 are currently active and surfing as I type this) wireless I-Openers using DWL-120 802.11b adapters (D-Link) without a hitch/glitch!

I recall some discussion of issues (problems) with the Linksys 10 wired adapter. If it helps, before I encountered I-Openers I never used USB, now I prefer USB devices... it's much easier to just unplug to port than not!

I'm using the LinkSys USB10/100TX with Win2K and have had mixed results. Seems it has problems staying linked when large files are transferred. Small files seem OK but when I try to send very large files, 50 meg and above, it crashes the connection. I'm using the stock USB port and have not yet installed the second port.

Check out the FixUSB topic in the technical section. Programmer has written several small patches, trying to address the large file transfer problem. Many different USB LAN systems on I-Openers do not work very well, particularly when transfering data out. Data is corrupted or computers crash. If you think your LAN is working well, try transfering a jpeg of about 1meg out of the I-Opener. See if the picture is corrupted when you open it up in the other computer.
