All I-opener 2001 should be V5s.

Why not load MSD or some other system diagnostic and let it identify the innards? I realize that this involves changing the operating system and reprogramming the Sandisk, but you will do that anyway.

I bought a few I-Opener 2001s at a local CompUSA myself. Sold 3, kept 1, then one of the ones I sold came back (someone actually wanted to use it as an Internet appliance but couldn't because Netpliance has officially ceased offering new service), so now I have two (three including the v2 I-Opener that I'm using this very moment :).

I don't know if the one I-Opener 2001 that I've hacked is just a fluke, but I've had odd problems hacking it. I have yet to successfully swap out the Rise-266 CPU for a Pentium 200 MMX (something that a few people here have had no problems with on actual v5 I-Openers). Also, there are DMA issues that force the internal IDE hard drive to use PIO mode (slooooow).

All in all it's still a cool device, but until I see another person here report positive results trying things that so far I've failed at (i.e. CPU change), I'm going to continue to question how closely these 2001s really are to v5s. Just my $0.02.

You just haven't got the proper drivers loaded it sounds like. Get the VIA 4in1 drivers and you should be all set. see http://www.viahardware.com The Pentium 200 MMX isn't much of a performance increase over the Rise though. Best drop in CPU upgrade for a V5 is the K62P, K62+ or K63+. At 200 Mhz you will get about a double over the Pentium 200 MMX.

The lack of a Yamaha sound chip with a Rise processor proves the V5.

Badflash - There's one problem with that... This I-Opener is running FreeBSD, not Windows. :) The 4in1 drivers won't help me.

As for the P200MMX, my main goal was to get better floating point performance. The speed of the machine is tolerable with the Rise processor, but when floating point stuff is required it slows down considerably.

(I sure wish the DMA thing would be worked out somehow, though. If I knew more about writing drivers...)
