Stock IO and Earthlink
Has there been a recent change in policy?

My mother-in-law, who has a stock v1 IO running standard Netpliance software with Earthlink access, received a recorded phone message the other day saying her local access number would be going away, apparently w/no instructions as to what the impact would be or what she needed to do about it. Of course this caused her (she is 75) to go into a tailspin. I can find nothing on the iopener.net or via a Google search that anything has changed or that Earthlink might drop IO customers.

Has anyone else heard about this and can shed some light on what this is about? Many TIA.

See http://www.iopener.net/anyisp/ for Earthink IOP's
It looks like AT&T IOPS don't work like this.

Anyone know if this is due to the BIOS or the Sandisk image? I'm guessing that it is probably the Sandisk as it seems to be a high level function.

If anyone has a hacked earthink IOP, the old bios chip, and has not messed with the sandisk image I'd be VERY interested in getting my hands on it. Seems like there are lots of AT&T prisoners out there that need some help. Could be that they just need to dolly an Earthlink image onto their machine.

BadFlash, my mom-in-law's is an Earthlink v1 (original unhacked SanDisk), and I might be happy to volunteer except that she lives in another state (of the Union, that is). But if there's this one, then there are many more out there...

Hey Laserfan,

Im new to the list, but work at Earthlink. I can check to see if your mother has a different access number in her area if you get me the area code and city. We often decommission numbers due to contracts with vendors, however, we normally make sure most are covered by other vendors. As long as your mother has "internet service provider settings" in the prefs screen, you can change it. just email me at jsmark@mindspring.com if you need another number.

I just completed a conversion from the AT&T version of the IOP to a selectable ISP version.
In order to boot to the Earthink image I could not use the bios that came with the AT&T unit. I flashed it to the V531 wild_pencil image and it booted right up.

It is just a matter of using dolly to copy the earthlink image over and updating the bios, then you can use the IOP in its native mode with any isp.

Special thanks to Ragnar for the earthink image!

I'm pretty sure this would work with earlier versions as long as you can get the bios chip out.
