Introducing TTY-Opener

Hey, Sandisk-distros are all the rage nowadays! Check out my system, TTY-Opener!

TTY-Opener homepage

In a nutshell, TTY-Opener is a text-based "emergency" OS for the i-o's Sandisk. Basically, it's a simple OS to keep on the Sandisk to help you out in a pinch. Because it's so small, it's dead-simple to modify (flat ext2 filesystem) and you still have almost half the Sandisk for your own customizations.

Based on the mini-distro ttylinux, you get lotsa goodies in a small space: links web browser, dial-up support for the modem, dhcpd (if you enable it), lotsa USB device support, telnet & ssh clients, dos, ext2 & rieserfs support, telnet & http demons, gpm mouse, NFS, mpg123, gnu tar & afio, tons of busybox commands and lots more. Now how much would you pay? Yeah, I know, nuthin', ya cheapskates. :)

If you are looking for a jailbait (graphical) alternative, you are probably better off checking out Ingo's M4I. It's great!

This is one of things that I needed, and thought I would polish-up and release. Hope someone enjoys it.

Just posting a follow-up...

I'm releasing .02 of TTY-Opener. Pretty much the same as before, but now sporting a 2.4.10 kernel and updated busybox, etc. Also did some docs fixin'.

This will probably be the last release for a long time, since the new busybox seems very stable and the new kernel is working nicely as well. TTY-Opener now does 150% more than I need, but it was alot of fun putting it together. Enjoy!

Hey Doog,

Any interest in recompiling the kernel to add DiskOnChip support, and making it available for Websurfer users? :)

Thanks!

in addition to recompiling the kernel for disk on chip 2000, you'll have conten with config for the video outon ws! midori linux lok promising but xconfig for websurfer video, svideo and vga are a real pain!but m stickng this ws as a dial up router

Hmmm, couple of problems. I don't have a websurfer, so I'm not sure what kernel config you would need to get everything working with that piece of equipment.

The good news is that it's very easy to change the kernel in TTY-Opener. At the end of the instructions is a FAQ on how to load the disk image into the loopback. From there you can clean-out the kernel and the few modules that are around. Compile your own special kernel, and copy it into the disk image. Unmount it.

At this point the image won't boot automatically, because lilo needs reset. You have a couple of options here, but for me the easiest is to copy the image to the sandisk. My I-O has a hard disk, so using the regular distro on that I mount the filesystem on the sandisk, and use lilo to boot TTY-Opener off the sandisk. Finally, reboot into TTY-Linux, run lilo in there to put lilo in the MBR of the sandisk. Now I can boot TTY-Linux with/without the hard drive, because there is "two" versions of LILO, one in each MBR.

It sounds alot harder than it is. :) Probably in the future if I do something like this again I'll check out GRUB, since I don't believe you have to "redo" it when you change kernels.

TTY-Opener sounds like it will work beautifully for me on the Websurfer if I can get it working. Time to roll up my sleeves and give it a shot. I'm definitely a linux newbie, but will follow the instructions and let you know how it goes.

Never recompiled a kernel before, this should be interesting :) I don't think the video out on the WS requires configuration/drivers, at least not in text-only mode.

M-Systems' DiskOnChip2000 linux driver, if anyone is interested: http://www.m-sys.com/files/drivers/doc/doc-linux-5.0.0.tgz

Before you try recompiling the kernel, I believe the 2.4 kernel has support for Disk On Chip built-in. If the TTY kernel is not a special recompile to save space, the DOC should work.

Warning: This is second hand info. I have not tryed this myself, but I talked to someone in the websurfer forum that had done it.

Good Luck

Ok, I now know a bit more about this...

Yes, you will definately have to compile a new kernel, because I don't have any of this stuff turned on. Look in the Memory Technology Devices (MTD) section for NFTL. That's what you need. You can turn on read and optional (beta) write support.

If you manage to get this working without any experience compiling kernels and such, well, you are definately a natural. :)

I wish I knew a bit more about these things, but without one handy it's hard to do anything with it. Even with the I-opener's sandisk, which is pretty generic nowadays, I had to dig out a patch from the kernel mailing list to make any of the newer 2.4.x series kernels work well with the Sandisk. I still have to apply that 1 liner patch each time I update a kernel for the i-opener. I'm sure you will run into similar problems with the DiskOnChp, since it seems to have even flakier support.

If you need the kernel .config I used for TTY-Opener, I can send it or post it on the webpage. I intended to include it in the tarball, but forgot. That would give you a good starting point, then you would only have to turn on the stuff I mentioned above and compile.
